Am I the only one who thinks that the King's Gambit is trash?

Trash?

I remember when the Berlin was trash.

And the Kings Indian Defense.

And the Gruenfeld.

And the Scotch.

Todays trash, is tommorows mainline.

No opening is trash @<2000 level, if it is played correctly.

VULPES_VULPES

I'm not particularly fond of the KG either, but I think I've done reasonably well against it as black.

However, I'm not one to have a calculation contest with my opponent right from the opening, so that opening's not for me.

PS: an opening you should really complain about: Budapest Gambit

True it's trash and the great players that use these openings only succeed because they're so knowledgable about chess and have so much experience. If a beginner plays the King's Gambit, he might be okay for a few moves but he will lose as soon as the opponent plays a move he didn't expect. To play openings well you need a deeper understanding of the game in all its aspects.

So true! OP, I'm with you!

After 1. e4 vs a 1800+, I'm afraid of running into rather a good Sicilian repertoire than the Berlin (though I'm not a fan of Ruy Lopez with either side).

The_bruce

Yes you are.

When I was young, I was regularly thrashed by attacking-style players who used the King's Gambit. It took me quite a while to learn to stay on the board with them tactically. I never had consistent success against the King's Gambit until I started playing Fischer's variation against it (his famous "bust" of the King's Gambit--perhaps not a total bust, but at least something that gave me an equal fighting chance).

To the OP...I will challenge you, and will play the King's Gambit. Accept?

I issued a challenge to you...your filters blocked it though.

I don't think it's trash, here i did 3 seconds look into the internet, and found a game. Not of the line that was suggested, which sounds Not so good.

JGambit

OP is mad because he loses to it.

Don't get mad about gambits, the real reason gambits are effective is they combine surprise with a lead in development and more farmiliarity with the positions for the person offering the gambit.

If paul morphy played it then it is more then good enough for people of your level.

until you are an IM you dont know garbage from gold. I recomend you to use gambits vs your peers. it will teach you more than trying to play like Magnus.

I love this game because it shows how gambits can have more tricks then first look. you take the material defend for a while and eventually feel you have earned the right to attack.

The burden of continual defense on the mind if often the real compensation of a gambit, the player accepting often becomes worn out from calculating variations to stay alive and eventually gets careless. This shows up in dumb blunders later.

Moral of the story is be realistic about your mental strength (or experience with the particular position) before grabbing material in the opening.

Am I the only one who thinks that the King's Gambit is trash?

It is on my list of "semi-dubious tries" along with the Budapest, the Benko, the accepted From and a few lines of the Scandinavian for which I think there should be a refutation.

But I am also aware that this belief is not influencing the least the fact that I have a terrible time when playing these openings.

Thanks to all who gave me positive input on this topic. To those who wasted time making accusatory comments: really?

I did neither, but challenged you to a game with me as white playing the King's Gambit. Interested?

Nope not trash. Doesn't fit my style but certainly worth a try when in for a sharp fight. Against it as black I tried various d5 stuff for a while but lately after accepting I like g6! So e4 e5 f4 exf4 Nf3 g6 With Bh6 comming temporarily which seems to be slightly offbeat and seems to surprise/annoy most people playing white. Seems to give me nice games.

Isn't chess a funny old game in that we as players can never really totally agree on much of anything that isn't total forced..

Mind you it doesn't really help when questions are asked based on incorrect play and a faulty supposition.

If my standard rating was under 1000 I'd keep my opinions to myself. You barely know how the horsie moves.... just saying.

johnmusacha

in an L shape?

ThrillerFan

In response to the OP, NO!  You are NOT the only one that thinks the KG is trash!

I make TWO of us that think the KG is utter garbage!
