Annoying openings
Annoying = I don't know what to do.
Or "I know what to do, but I dislike the sort of positions that arise."
Either way, the answer is almost always to educate yourself: know what you are supposed to do, and learn to enjoy positions in which you are objectively better.
All that said, the openings I find most annoying are the questionable ones I play when my opponent somehow already knows the obscure refutation. XD
I always get sad when I am playing Sicilian on black and looking forward to a good Najdorf game
1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. *d4 never comes*
That's just personal style, I find those games relatively boring comparatively ![]()
You can't control whether the opponent plays the main line or not. It's good to know the main lines, but you shouldn't get annoyed by opponents who don't want to play along.
Good example, these days I play the Nimzowitsch defense (1. e4 Nc6), and a great many players won't follow with 2. d4, but instead play 2. Nf3 or 2. Nc3. I'm ready for the main line, but I can't get too concerned if folks hope to transpose into a Spanish or a Vienna. Likewise when playing the King's Gambit only to have the gambit declined.

i used to love it when the nimzowitsch was declined and i got to play it miles style, d6, nf6 bg4 e6 d5 until i learned it was a refuted line
that really hurt. and had to switch to the acceptable but less original d6 nf6 g6 lines.
as for annoying lines for me, any stonewall structure is the end of me. i really struggle to find any decent counterplay.
Dark : "as for annoying lines for me, any stonewall structure is the end of me. i really struggle to find any decent counterplay."
Just do an opposite stonewall structure, then wait for the other player to get bored first and push a pawn. ![]()

Check Hover much?
You can post your most annoying opening, but I will do mine. The Benko Gambit is close, which is d4 Nf6 c4 c5 d5 b5. But I would say the most annoying for me is the Torre. It’s like the quickest pin ever! And while you try to chase away the bishop, they do hyper modern stuff, do fianchettos, get strong queenside castles, use their knights to their advantage. The tromposky is not as annoying because there is no pin. My favorite opening to annoy other people is the Bogo Indian and Old Indian defense. What opening is your most hated and your most liked?
P.S. I am opening nerd already, so if my rating seems low to you, do not think I am trying to sound smart. I love spending time in the opening explorer. My not annoying, but favorite opening, is the Reti or English.
I think the Torre is worse than the Trompowsky because Black can play Ne4 and White won't be able to kick the knight because there is already a knight on f3.
For me, the most annoying opening is the Exchange Variation in the Ruy Lopez. I think it's immature, childish even.
"Ha ha, you've just doubled up your pawns and now your pawn structure is ruined and mine is not. Ha ha."
Really? Out of all the openings you could possibly choose, that's the best you can come up with?

I fail to see what is wrong with the Ruy Exchange.
The resulting positions are quite interesting, and I don't mind at all playing them with either color.
But apparently you know better than that...

What makes you think I know better?
It is a very good opening. I believe it was one of Kasparov's favorites and who am I to second guess him? Or you, Mr. International Master?
I personally happen to find it annoying for the reason given and that's what this topic is about, if I'm not mistaken.
