I play the transvestite attack.  Very powerful opening.  Watch below.

I think e5 is too boring at certain levels. At unrated to 1200 everyone plays e4 e5. But when you get up to 1400 to 1800 the players tend to lean away from the common standard, and build a personal preference. 1800 to 2400 we see even less of it, because at this point, the players are usuaully very strong and wish to have a good personality, and e5 loses it's punch because it is so dull. But once you get 2400 and up, it seems e5 is popular again because the Masters know it is the most equalizing and solid. This is only what I have observed, I am surely mistaken, but I thought I would toss in my two cents.

It's depressing, but e5 isn't as popular as it used to be.  I don't face the Scandinavian too often and have never had a tough time responding to it.  That said, the Sicilians and the French are common for me to come across.  I actually know incredibly little French theory, so I just make it simple and play the Exchange.  For the Sicilian, I respond with the Smith-Morra and that usually gets a really good game.  I'd recon my win rate with it is probably the highest of any of my openings.  I do love when people play e5 though, because the Scotch is a fantastic opening.

In games that matter, like good player vs good player, it might even be the most popular.

1.e4 e5 is not at all boring, whatever the level.

If u find it boring, it is only because u don't know how to create fun with it.

I guess u play symmetrical position and u and your opponent are unable to create something.

But this is wrong about 1.e4 e5...

About Lolli attack, well, of course it is good for white, but almost nobody play it as black, all "strong" players knowing that Nxd5 is bad or let's say dubious...

And 1.e4 e5 is very popular at all level!

friedmelon

It's based on how you learn't your openings. For me I play d4 because I lose on most games when my opponent plays e4 so I might lose when I play e4 so I chose that move.

wait, how that this forum went back alive?

Mauve26

Well, we have a competitor for the oldest non-staff forum, ten years.

E5 is very popular at all levels of chess because it can produce good positions

I've been very surprised lately to see people like Carlsen and other top GMs trotting out the Italian Game and the Giuoco Piano. I'm not sure they've been that successful with it, so it may just be a temporary thing . . .
