I recently picked up the 3 volumes of Chess Openings Essentials http://www.newinchess.com/shop/ProductsList.aspx?CategoryID=160&utm_campaign=Chess_Opening_Essentials&utm_medium=carrousel&utm_source=newinchess.com&utm_content=banner.html&Currency=US%20Dollar published by New In Chess, and I'm happy. I spent about a month looking at books in various book stores in NY and NJ, and reading what people had to say on line about the various books that are available. To me, the material is presented in a great way by their judicious use of color type when needed and color in the diagrams when needed, plus they go to great lengths to explain what is going on and they seem to deal a lot with move order and transpositions.
There seems to be two ways to write these books, many columns of variations and little text, or more text and less focus on long variations. I have MCO 13 and never warmed up to it. But I can appreciate that some might not want a lot of text between the variations.
