Best way to learn chess openings?

Sort:
rafazrte
I'm relatively new to chess. The few I know about chess its thanks to Youtube. I already know the principles and overall ideas of openings. I usually play the Ruy Lopez or the Italian game since I felt those were the easiest to start with, however I'm looking forward to learn new openings which might better fit my playing style. I have an attacking playing style and hate games with clustered centers. Any suggestions? Also, any learning tool that you could recommend me would be nice.

For someone seeking help with choosing openings, I usually bring up Openings for Amateurs by Pete Tamburro (2014).

I believe that it is possible to see a fair portion of the beginning of Tamburro's book by going to the Mongoose Press site. Perhaps rafazrte would also want to look at Discovering Chess Openings by GM Johm Emms (2006).

Rafaztre, may I recommend you check out Chessable? It is an opening training website created by IM John Bartholomew. There's plenty of free content and it sounds like exactly what you are after. It is purely focussed on openings and it trains you in a quite clever, effective way.

I'd never heard of chessable, how advanced is it? I am about 1900 ish, would it be of use to me Danny?

Lee la "MCO" por completo, y cuando acabes, vuelvela a leer.

Yuri Senkevich (a former participant here) mentioned MCO from time to time, but I fear that it would not be very useful for someone "relatively new to chess".

"On being quizzed over chess lessons, Bobby Fischer advised ... Frank Brady, (tongue-in-cheek, I'm sure): 'For the first lesson, I want you to play over every column of Modern Chess Openings, including the footnotes. And for the next lesson, I want you to do it again.' ... opening encyclopaedias are an important part of chess literature, but I do wonder how I would have found the experience as a junior player of ploughing through the latest volume of intense opening theory. A bit bewildering perhaps?" - GM John Emms (2006)

In the decade since that Emms comment, opening encyclopaedias (at least those in book form) seem to have become a much less important part of chess literature. The last time I saw a new MCO (#15), it was only about two years after the Emms book.

You are quite right that, when he was active, his name appeared as YuriSenkevich. I do not know anything about the disappearance of his posts.

eaguiraud

The kings gambit looks like what you are looking for, almost any opening has material in youtube.

Kindaspongey: are you the same person as ylbai (or whatever his name was excactly). He was also coming up with incredible quotes all the time... I don't understand how you can know so many quotes...
kindaspongey

Yeah, that was me. Somebody said I was being kinda spongey and I decided that I liked the sound of it. If I understood how to change the symbol, I would probably get a spongebob picture. I like to read a lot, and find it fun to make a note of quotes.

I've recently read an article about the Hillbilly attack https://www.chess.com/article/view/the-birth-and-development-of-the-hillbilly-attack. Maybe that one is what you are looking for.

Get Shredder Classic and learn how to build a book.

Play in thematic tournaments with a focus on the different lines of a particular opening that you want to learn. Your asking for a opening but the two you named are as white. I like the French against e4.

It is easy.  You read a lot of books, preferably classics, with proper concentration.

kindaspongey

Alas, I am being given more credit than I deserve with that "proper concentration" stuff. I do like to hunt for quotes. Doesn't do much for one's rating, but I enjoy it.

Kindaspongey,

Interesting! Do you remember all of these quotes by heart or do you look through your notes?

If you mean changing your profile picture I can maybe help. You need to go to settings->profile and then you can change your picture to spongebob ;)

This is just a general explanation. If you have a specific problem/thing you don't understand about changing the picture you can message me of course and I will do my best to help you. You can also respond to this topic. We're offtopic already so why not? ;P
Fireline11
Hey Modest and Polite, a fellow Dutchman? Do you also know a lot of cool (chess) quotes? ;)

I have to look up the quotes and copy them as needed. Thank you for the offer of help with spongebob. Things are a little hectic right now, but, if you are still around, I will try to get back to you in a week or two about this.
