Very relevant to the theory that I am learning, helped improved whilst playing the black pieces, thank you so much for the insight you have given me through this video on the Caro-Kann

If you are into the 4...Nd7 Caro-Kann, get Cyrus Lakdawala's "Caro-Kann: Move by Move"   He dies churn out a book every month or so, which often means books that are iffy at best (Today's Eric Schiller?), but this one is a rare gem of his.

Got to check that book out, seems interesting.

Nd7 is just the worst of the 3 move 4 options imo

But notice that it is "In Your Opinion" and based on Zero facts what-so-ever, and so the validity of the post is also Zero!

At least when I give a fact about one line being worse than another, I give substance to back it up.  If you are going to send such a post, have something to back up the statement!

In fact, during my brief stint of the Caro-Kann, I happened to play 4...Nd7 myself.  The reason I quit the Caro has nothing to do with 3.Nc3.

If 4...Nd7 is that weak, what is White's almighty response?  5.Ng5?  5.Bc4?  5.Nf3?  Some trash line?

A couple of formed World Champions (Smyslov, Karpov) will kindly disagree with you, but of course you know better.

The current trend is (by far) 4...Nf6 5.Nxf6+ exf6, but this does not mean that 4...Bf5 and the other couple of lines are inferior.

Smyslov and Karpov were around at a time before the h5 move was discovered

Isn’t Bc4 just an edge for white though

There’s a reason that basically nobody plays Nd7 anymore

Propeshka

Watch some "hanging pawns" videos on YouTube. Stjepan likes the Karpov variation with Nd7 very much and he explains it well. On the other hand, he also shows you the positions he as a mortal, non-titled player is uncomfortable playing.

I fail to see what sort of fooking advantage white has after 5.Bc4 Ngf6 6.Ng5 e6 7.Qe2 Nb6 - and theory has changed very little since the Karpov era.

Then why don't people still play it

Ever heard of trends?  Hype?  Short-term Popularity?

Based on your logic, the Exchange Ruy Lopez, French Defense, Dragon Sicilian, f3-Nimzo-Indian, and Lasker's Defense (in the QGD) must all be utter crap too because of their lack of popularity in recent times, huh?

SMH!

Saddest thing isn't that you are claiming nonsense, but rather that you believe in them.

I don’t believe it I’m just wasting your time wink.png

rychessmaster1

I do believe Nd7 is just inferior though

najdorf96

indeed. As a CK player, I agree with TF, but also with the NM Ry! 🤔

najdorf96

Garry Kasparov lost to a Computer playing 4. ... Nd7. Granted it was a Long time ago but yeah, it left a gaping hole in confidence for alot of people, including me.

najdorf96

indeed taking IM phren's line; cool there is no fooking advantage after 6. Ng5 ~but things become alittle dicey after white plays instead 6. Nxf6 Nxf6 7. c3[!] Qc7 8. Ne2 e6 9. Qd3 b6 10. Bf4 Bd6 11. Qg3 Bxf4 12. Nxf4 Bb7 13. a4 a5 and white has a slight edge in the game Morozevich-Adams, Madrid 1996
