I like the third one better less risk.

I have to assume the 2nd and 3rd are

to show your opponent you have no fear of it.

Other than that you can avoid it early.

all you lines are wrong. in the Russian deffence, black plays 2.d6, avoiding all of the trap lines you showed us.  I really like the Russian deffence.  Its strong and not easy to break down.

3. ...d6.

The best way to counter the Russian Opening is with the move 3.Nc3!!

Every Russian/Petroff player will simply be disgusted with you after this move. I have had some of them tell me I'm stupid and that Nxe5 is playable.

I respond with I know its playable but so is Nc3 and now it puts pressure on you do you feel the pressure?

They than started talking trash. Saying I was a stupid patzer in which they had no time for. They didn't ever offer me a rematch either becuase they was so disgusted. They said I'm a dumb rookie that doesn't realize Nxe5 is the mainline and im playing this stupid line.

Thats the way to play it lady's and gentlemen 3.Nc3!! this move is a brillant move. They want you to take the e5 pawn so they can play d6 than take your e4 pawn. Don't allow this to happen.

Let them know at move 3 you are not playing their game. Their playing your game and you have the white pieces. Build pressure on e5 (with moves like Bb5) like in a Ruy Lopez style. The Spanish Torture will begin. The knight on c3 can later on move to g3 as well. Laughing

I will write a disclaimer

* Do not play 3.Nc3 if you are very easily offended, They will talk smack about you all game, They will write mean things on your profile wall, they will abandon the games, They will let their timer run out, They will send you hate mail. They will do all of this as a tactic to try and get you distracted/focused on what they are saying instead of being focused on the position.*

You have been warned

3.Nc3!!  1-0

tbh I like 3. Nxe5 d6 4. Nf3 Nxe4 5. Nc3 Nxc3 6.dxc3 but 3.Nc3 is nice as well

there is no refution to the Russian deffence.  end of story.  white has the extra move, and he has to make it count. period.  all the lines posted are fake, and wrong. Don't learn that. learn the 3...d6. lines. this will help you actaully have a shot @ winning.

People play 3. Nc3 against me all the time. It's likely to become a four-knights game, and is respectable enough, unlike for example 2. Bc4 against the Sicilian. White retains some advantage, just very little.

3 Nc3!! 1-0 is overdoing it. White has a slight advantage at best, and any Petroff player should be prepared to fight against it. You're acting like 3. Nc3 is the best move in the world, when it's definitely not.

  1. White gets a slight advantage
  2. It forces a Petroff player to know how to deal with 3.Nc3 when most are content with the mainline
  3. If the Petroff player doesn't play accurately it offer's the chance to turn the position into a Ruy Lopez. Which many Petroff players seek to avoid which is why they play 2...Nf6 instead of 2...Nc6.

It is your opinion that I am over doing 3.Nc3.

However, Some could argue I'm under doing 3.Nc3

Or how about not playing 3...Nxe4, which really deserves a question mark.

Also fiveofswords is spot on with the Ruy Lopez comment. You are supposed to play your pawn to c3 in the Ruy Lopez to support an eventual d4, the knight is generally supposed to go to d2, f1 then either g3 or e3. This has long been the prevailing strategy.

It's all thanks to to the first World Champion that it is the main line of the Ruy Lopez.
