Cunningham defence, bertin gambit

I think the question is not particularly important since that position will never arise with correct play; this defence with the check on h4 is not best for black and should be met with Kf1. g3?! is a romantic gambit which was considered already dubious in the early 1900. If i remember correctly black's best is to take on h2 and then open the position with d5.

the gambit is playable but only if you don't expect it to be great. dubious maybe but not losing or refuted. it's fun either way. not taking on h2 seems pointless though, i see no benefit to black in white having the structure shown around his king as opposed to simply a pawn on h2.
It's both losing, and refuted. The correct Black strategy is the one posted by Bresando: taking on h2, and then opening lines with ...d5.
And yes, it's fun, if you do like being busted early on. Mr. Leopold von Sacher-Masoch has analysed these lines in detail.

Well, the fact that kasparov managed to draw is hardly an indication of the fact that Bh4+ is devastating. You know, the guy was pretty good at chess ;) Of course the variation is not losing by force, but white gets a very nice centre and the bishop remains exposed; having the king on f1 is often nothing tragic for white in the KG, due to the fact that he owns the centre and so the uncastled king is very hard to attack. There are much better ways to defend angainst the KG as far as i know.
Hi,
I mostly play the king's gambit and I had prepared some defences against tis gambit like the cunningham defence and the albin counter gambit.. My opponent ( we are both 1300 on chess.com) played the cunningham defecne but didnt take the pawn on h2 (wich I prepared). I dont have an engine and wanne know if take on h2 is the best move so I have to be more comfortable with an other move like d7-d6... Can someone give me some advice? Or should is stop playing the bertin gambit because it is even bad against an opponent rated 1300...
grtz, gl
