I always assumed that d4 players prefer sleepy, positional games. Personally, I hate closed games so started playing the Grunfeld. I’m guessing that most d4 players dislike it because if they liked open games, they’d play e4, but I’m not a d4 player so I wouldn’t really know.

That is a horrible assumption that many inferior players assume!

20 years ago when I played 1.d4, I played the 4 pawns attack against the King's Indian Defense, a wide open position.

As an e4 player, I often play the Advance French (a Closed position).  Many play the CLOSED Ruy Lopez.  I play the CLOSED Sicilian.

The assumption that d4 players want a Closed position and e4 players want an open position is moronic!

Ooh! I got an "inferior" AND a "moronic." It's been a good day.

Thank you! Yes, Be7 is practically better - the e4 player plays Nf3, then bishop to somewhere - and 0-0. besides, moving the bishop is easier than moving other pieces, and most importantly - patzer sees pin - patzer plays pin. (even if it only Looks like a pin).

also - patzer sees rook capture - patzer plays it! as shown..

because rook takes rook is Always 'check' - so it's the most forcing move...

very clever, friend. chess is 30-40 percents psychology, as mentioned by J. Polgar.

There is a reason I don't play d4, and it's because my most hated opening in all of chess (Black or White) is a d4-opening!  No wonder why I play 1.e4 and 1.b4!

Why do you hate d4? [it's okay, I'm not a moron, not inferior, and don't have a dog or smooth white thighs - you can trust me] and plz don't say "Grunfeld", there are many good answers to it nowadays, best in practice is the Russian var. Besides, if you hate d4 as Black, aren't you suppose to Like it as White? Yes, everyone hates to face 1.d4, even d4 players - that's why 1.d4 is so good!

And if the answer is "I hate it because of the Grunfeld", then why do you hate d4 as Black? - just play the Grunfeld! Did you meant to say you hate d5?

Solmyr1234

Okay, since you're a hardnose, I'll be more accurate - What do you hate about d4? ["I just hate it" is also an answer]

[because the answer to "why" we hate / love things is really a question to G-d - the creator of our emotional system].

That's not how that works.  He's not saying that the Gruenfeld is an objective refutation to d4.  He's saying he doesn't like or feel comfortable in the positions that arise in it.  It's perfectly possible -- common, even -- to dislike (or enjoy) certain openings from both sides of the board.

Hey @Solmyr1234, how do you include arrows in your posted board variations, if you don't mind me asking?

I reallyyyyyyy don’t like to play against the queen gambit

KeSetoKaiba

Despite all of the openings listed, I didn't vote because I don't mind facing any of them! Perhaps that is why I play 1. d4 grin.png

If you don't like playing vs the Grunfeld just play 3.f3 to transpose to the Samisch King's Indian. Also, when white castles queenside that game becomes a race to see whose attack succeeds first. Hardly dull and boring.

ren97ren

I mean I do like to play blackmar diemer gambit

In the diagram editor, when I'm in the last move (it has to be the last one) I drag the pieces with the right button of mouse [or of laptop pad to be honest] from their original sqrs, to the sqrs I want them to go. - the arrows already suppose to appear there - in the editor window.

btw, if your diagram doesn't appear at all, you edit the post, add/substract something minimal ("." - example), and click 'post'.

I use Umfufu [Ubuntu], maybe it matters, I thought I'd say it.

I hate to face the Benko, but what I do is this:

That may be silly, but it would bamboozle him. now, while he got pawns to take, I'll safely 0-0 lol

I DO hate facing the Grunfeld, because at My level, it's rare to see it - so I forget how the Russian Variation against it looks like. Okay, let's see your idea on the board, shall we..

Interesting.

Yes, I know Black can take the rook, I'm no inferior moron, but I wanted to show my idea for White.
Besides, temporarily, White's light bishop is stuck. And not so temporarily, your dark bishop is very annoying for him [don't hurry to switch him].

Of horse, you need to know to answer the Cambridge Springs, or else

Benko can be annoying if you accept gambit and mix up your preparation.

I have a study on the Benko Gambit. The author recommends the f3 line and provides sample games

Thanks. I'll look into it later. Myself also have two repertoires against Benko, one of them here, and another one I'll add soon (white accept gambit and play e4, with artificial castling in variations, which is considered the best approach, but knowledge of theory is required)

Correction - the arrows can be "painted" at any move, not just the last move.
