Is there a preferred way to respond when black plays d5 after the e4 opening?

Resign. No one can do anything good against the Scandinavian.

If you want a chance for a draw, play 2. exd5

Lol, take the pawn then bring out your knight to kick the Queen back. With this opening you have to develop your pieces quickly. Keep that in mind.

It is the oldest written chess game, somewhere around 1500. Google Scandinavian, Chess, Poem and you end up with love, war and trade.

To avoid those lines, Tyler329, I play 2... Nf6 if 3. c4, I play 3... c6. A sound opening, although black is down material.

I play it like this. Most games end up like the final position.

Unless you want to learn all the teory of the Scandinavian just develop your pieces, castle and you'll have a comfortable game.
