many people prefer berlin some marshall but whatever opening you play you must be aware of your opponents plan and ideas and dangerous attacks .
You can also go for the Fianchetto defense with g6.

yep, The way to defend is only by pure defence skills or knowing all lines/tactical sacrifices
whatever you play against 3 bb5, (except 3..nd4) you should learn how to handle the exchange variation types of position since white can basically force this on move 4. it doesn't matter too much that white may get an inferior version of it if you don't know how to play your side, or somehow you don't like the type of play that arises.

Play the cozio (1. e4 e5, 2. Nf3 Nc6, 3 Bb5 Ne7). Nobody will see it coming and it offers black pretty decent positions after fianchettoing the kingside bishop and short-castling.
