Does anyone here like the Van Geet/Dunst opening?

Does anyone here like to open with Nc3 ?

If so, will you share why and what your strategy is when using it?

I've never used it in a serious game and can't even remember using it in a blitz game. Just type "Dunst Opening" into a search engine, here's a few of the many hits I got:

GOOD LUCK - you'll probably need it playing this opening, although it might work for you in blitz and OTB chess

PS: I suggest you set up a thematic tnmt with 1.Nc3 (you can make it open or limit it to players rated under 1800 or whatever your preferred ceiling is) and enter it yourself of course, that's one way to get some experience here.

Dont think ive ever opened with the dunce.Probably did wnen i was a kid though.i think my strategy would be to loose though.

I used to play it quite a bit... especially the transposition to a Center-Counter opening line:

1. Nc3 d5

2. e4 Nf6

3. exd Nxd5

4. Bc4 Nxc3

5. Qf3 ...

White gets a lead in development. Overall, the Dunst probably isn't as strong as White's other opening options, but it isn't bad either, and could take your opponent off-guard.

I once played it in one of the final rounds of the Atlantic Open, and won the game.

I play it for the same reason. I mainly want to get someone off of the game. When I see them try to force a transposition, I like to keep making them play my game instead of theirs.

What do you do when someone either plays d5, forcing you into a cramped version of a queens gambit like position or c5 trying to force you into e4 mode and thus having a sicilian against you, where you are caught with your pants down tactically, because the move order is different ?

I think most of the games would simply transpose to more common lines.

Not bad, and also not terribly challenging. Quite playable, but white should not expect any sort of advantage from it.

I realize the limits of this opening, but I like the fact it forces people with more experience with openings than me, out of their normal game plan.

I have more trouble it seems when someone plays d5, forcing me into a cramped version of a queen's gambit like position, with the c pawn stuck behind my knight, or probably even worse is when the play c5 and try to force me into a king's pawn game tranposition against a sicilian. It seems like I am tactically behind tempos somehow. Chessmaster does this to me and someone here did to me. The person here got my queen. Chessmaster just crushed me, like always.

Well, if you don't like blocking your c-pawn, then do not play 1.Nc3... simple as that.

I have been looking for a way to play a very flexible opening that has the effect or option of having it either way. I am sure others are too, especially for black. Have any advice in this regard or am I living in fantasy land about defying the laws of physics and chess ? LOL...If so, I understand...really what's the point of having cake if you can't it too.

R.I.P Dirk van Geet, after whom the opening is named.

Most flexible is 1.Nf3, but this is also its main disadvantage: It is so flexible, than it can transpose to a crapload of different openings.

I do like 1.Nf3 a lot too...

If I gave you a few games to analyze for something that is difficult to explain, would you?

I realize you are going to find many mistakes that would get crushed by really good players but, I think you will see what I try to do and maybe there is a more efficient way to accomplish the same thing and I am just missing it.

fabelhaft

Kirsten should stick to making movies or improve her opening repertoire.

One of the more famous games with the opening, Morozevich vs Kasparov (in rapid chess):

There are many synonyms for this opening...

AKJett

1.Nc3 d5 2.e4!?

I could play a game with you in that...

AKJett

plus search my real name (find it on profile) and you will find a game when i lost to an NM playing c5 but i had a better position in the midgame...

Maybe you should stop "thinking" so much and check them out. Or do you always believe everything that you make up?

50/50 before adding the likelyhood people will transpose to what they know and are comfortable with...

on the other hand... you have a point

I have never organized a tourney before. I figure as soon as I start why wife will be nagging. I am surprised she isn't already. I'll look into it, but I might start playing something altogether different.

nameno1had

I created a tourney for this opening...

I would enjoy playing any of you...

Thanks for your input.

1.Nc3 is a bit passive.

einstein99

still think it should be called the dunce opening. The only strategy is to loose when you do the dunce
