Dragon Yugoslav Attack

There is a line on the Yugoslav Attack that goes like this:

I was wondering who it is good for, and why. Can anyone help me?

Oh, and can somebody tell me about the Kb2!? line, I don't know much about it, so I left the line unannotated.

very interesting, i play bc4 so ive never had this problem.
you could grab the a7 pawn could you not, i didnt really calculate, and its late so i probs overlooked something. stopping those queenside passers is the best chance for white, though he does have nice development

Oh yeah, but than couldn't Black use the a-file somehow? By Ra8, and than maybe checking White?

Than again, coincidentally, its 9 am in Canada, so I must be missing something too.

I assume you mean the 10. Kb1 line for white that is so popular?  I have some nice lines posted on my blog you can skim through.  I think when your opponent did Qa5, you should have taken with the pawn.   Try to get some counterplay rolling by opening up the h file. Apparently your opponent was not afraid of the attack you had going, or he was a honey badger.

Generally removing one of blacks a or b pawns leads to suicide in these sharp lines.

Hey who are you calling a honey badger? I like honey badgers, but thats not the point! I was Black! :)

I guess h takes is a worthy line, I 'll have to go more into that. And about the 10. Kb1 lines, can you post a link to your blog, I 've never seen that line before.

I don't really think its suicide for Black to lose the q-s pawns, because they are open files, but generally, I feel Black doesn't care about the q-s pawns, he wants to promote on the k-s.

And you are kind of right about the calm play from Black, because for me, the position is magical: White pushes his pawns the the other side of the board to mate Black, but Black just calmly shuffles his pieces, until the last moment, when Black has more PRACTICAL winning chances. Amazing!

Wait, when you say suicide, you mean for White, or Black?

Everything up to move 20 has been played before, and here white uniformly plays 20.Kd2 which has scored very well, but this has little value: White has a couple of large improvements earlier on.

Suicide for white, you usually don't want to open up any more lines for black to attack.  The line you played is actually considered book.  I think the move your opponent missed was 19. Kb2.  Moving into a discovered attack is usually a poor idea but it seems to be fine in this line and it holds the a pawn.  Also there is neat trick at whites disposal in some of these Rxf3 lines, and it could have possibly worked here.

Crazy ideas like this.  Turns a sharp dragon into a super sharp one.   Also I was confused that you were black, your diagram is from whites point of view.

And this is the link to my blog.  Pretty basic stuff on the most common lines of the dragon.

Oh, OK, thats pretty interesting, because it seems that in ur diagram Black is losing. But there must be improvements: Else the Dragon wouldnt be what it is today.

And i dont know how to flip the diagram, so yeah.

@IM pfren: Can u show the improvements at the start of the line u mentioned? Are they for White, or for Black as well.

P.S; Nice blog.

great games.

Someone did that to me, I was black, and I lost.  It wasn't this exact position but it was something pretty close.  I tried to sac the rook and got smacked.

To flip the diagram, there is a tiny button on the "Board Editor" tab that you can tick on that flip board.

22. Ne4 wins the b pawn.

Black can improve with 21...Bf5! when he probably has a good game, but 21.Kb2! (already mentioned by DimeBagDerek) is a not-so-obvious improvement, when Vigorito in his fairly recent Dragon book claims an advantage for white.

White's improvements are quite earlier, instead of the "natural" 13.Kb1, which allows the nice Nxf3 trick. Either 13.Be2, or 13.Nb3 Qc7 Be2 leave white for preference (both well annotated by Vigorito).

Also notice that in the case white plays the highly topical 9.g4!? instead of 9.0-0-0 (IMHO this move is the most annoying challenge to the Dragon currently), then the ...Bd7 plan fails completely, as white expands directly with h4 and h5, postponing castling until this is strictly necessary, and Black's position can be critical very early on.

Nice info IM pfren!  I will study the 9. g4 lines and post some of those findings on my dragon blog.  This opening leads to some really fun games and any improvements are welcome!  IM pfren, if you could pick apart my dragon blog, I would be thankful.  I know your comments are sometimes overly harsh and snarky, but they are usually the truth and full of good info, so I would welcome them.

@pfren: Whats the name of the Vigorito book?

And whats it about generally, what variations in the Dragon.

And lastly, is it mainly for White, or Black?

I'm looking for one that teaches from Blacks perspective.

It's Yugoslav attack only, with mild focus to Black (can also be used by white players). Not perfect, but useful for reference.
