English opening transpositions

If you play the English, then what do you like to transpose it to? I never played the English and is just wondering.

DrSpudnik

Just about every English player I've met likes to not transpose. It seems to irritate them.

Bugnotaur

Yes, it's irritating. If I wanted to play d4 I'd have played it on my first move. :p

I have noticed that some peoples response force it into a  sort king's indian or perhaps a form of the king's gambit. I like the english opening but, I tend to have trouble making it work against stronger players. Its weird how I like it because, I feel safer than using the queen or king's pawn opening. Though I seem to usually lose worse. I guess the difference is that I don't feel so stressed over the more tedious nature the other two openings seem to have for me.

If you don't mind playing a QGD, just play e6 & d5 and they have few really good options other than transposing.

Dunno...

I am personally never really bothered by playing against the English lines... even though I can't really say that I'm booked (I've looked at many master games, but I haven't ready any particular books on the opening, so I am not sure what is considered a main line in which case).

I play either a slow, solid, symmetrical English, or I break quickly wtih d5, it depends..

The funny thing, however, is that I have never lost against c4 as Black OTB (though this will not last forever, I know), even though several CMs played it against me in the past. I guess the opening is simply less critical, so there are not as many opportunities to blunder early, unlike the Sicilian or something like that.

There are, of course, some lines where one must be prepared, as for instance this one:

Though I haven't yet play this, since I often go Nf6+e6, trying to transpose into either the Bogo-Indian or Benoni (where I know more theory)

DrSpudnik

Careful with the Bogo efforts: The English players I know play 3 e4 after that.
