French Defense, Advance Variation... best continuation for black after 5.Be3?

Having problems as black against the French Advance 5. Be3 variation. That's right after I go ...c5, then ...Nc6 attacking the d4 pawn. They go 5.Be3 and attack my c5 pawn back. Then I always seem to get into some trouble. You guys know a good continuation against that?

After 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4.c3 Nc6 5.Be3....? dxc5 is not so good because of Nxe5. I would play Qb6.

Use this move-order: 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4.c3 Qb6. No more Be3 lines to worry about.

"Beating the French according to Victor Kupreichik" by Andrew Martin from Chessbase is good value in that it clearly sets out the intended plans rather well...The pfren 9....Na5 so called drawback line is in the third video in and all i will say is if White blithely swaps of his light squared bishop as mooted, he has no idea on what he (or she) is doing

Don't be mistaken, Kupreichik line is not refuted by the plan given above.

Black can claim equality, but no more.

Some games to show what happens if black plays Nc4 too soon, or if he/she plays the main line with developing (Bb4), then Nc4, trading on c3, etc...

The last game (which contains some innacuracies for both sides) is probably black's best move order, although i am not sure 17...f6 was forced. But black may be aware of white's dangerous ideas, seen in the other games i gave.

White could also trade queens with 17.Qc5, which is drawish.

Which is astonishing, is that Kupreichik continued to play his line till he was active, with very good results!

I would just give u the same advice than Odyson : afraid of this stuff? Just play Qb6 first (before Nc6), then no Be3!

Of course if u want to play another set up for black (Nc6-Bd7 for example, instead of Qb6-Nc6), then u will have to be ready against Kupreichick's line.
