Note that (particularly for the beginner openings tier list) they will frequently refer to some openings as "garbage" or "bad" (an unfortunate choice of terms in my view). This is not to say that these openings are inherently bad for all players. These qualifiers are meant simply to convey how appropriate the specific opening is for the level of player being discussed, in terms of, for example, how much so-called "theory" (i.e., the collection of extensively documented variations) the opening encompasses, or how much emphasis the opening places on positional versus tactical skills in order to play it well. So, an opening they refer to as "garbage" for a beginner may in fact be appropriate for higher rated players who typically know more of the theory for particular openings and have a more highly developed understanding of positional concepts.

vienna gambit is what i'm planning to learn to deal with king's gambit fishers. it has the strongest stats at the amateur level and i know i did lousy with whatever gallagher chose in his book and planned on buying a vienna book just for that.
the best though, depends on YOUR STYLE. the stonewall formation is super solid from either side of the board, is easy to learn, and i recall scoring much better in that than most lines i played, but i still hated it for the anti-tactical straight jacket it is.
beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
NO OPENING gets me jazzed up as much as the smith morra gambit though. gam bit haters will go on and on about the significance of that pawn, but who plays grandmasters? besides, endgames don't matter when you're winning scalps in the MIDDLEGAME with tactics. there aren't any annoying lines that i remember facing and one should already know the siberian trap (queen) so it never happens. with just 50 or so lines of theory when i couldn't EVER beat a sicilian with advance, exchange, grand prix OR wing gambit, but hit the ground running hard with smith morra to the tune of something like 50:6 results and +250 ratings points in just that line from my starting rating. how could a tactician like me NOT fall madly in love with that!
at the amateur level, blackmar diemer gambit has great stats. i beat my first opponent with it sans theory and have more wins i'm pretty sure. for someone like me who just can't get positional concepts and only looks at targets to go nuts on... gambits are ESSENTIAL. besides, i play TO HAVE FUN, not get a higher rating.
