I'm not really an e4 player, but I throw it out there every once in a while to keep my regular opponents guessing. With that in mind I must say I find the Sicilian to be the easiest main e4 defense to play against. Black is simply unable to centeralize his pieces, so if white just centeralizes his pieces and then proceeds to open the center he seems to have the better game.

really i thought sicilian was most difficult to play against. I thought French was the most easy . Not to play good against but to play against, in sicilian you need a lot of knowledge to not lose really really fast.

It depends on the amount of work you are willing to do. Anyway, a class player can build a "full" sicilian repertoire as white in a couple of days- all he needs to do is learning how to deal with 4-5 key positions.

Learning endless strings of moves in they mainlines played by the pros is the silliest thing one can do.

and whats the best way to learn them??

I've never been able to stick with a single system against the Sicilian for some reason.  The grass always seems greener on the other side - if I play the closed Sicilian I miss the fun activity White gets in the open lines, and if I play open lines I miss not feeling paranoid each move that I'm overextending or generally mortgaging my position for an illusory attack.

That said, I sort of feel that, vs. ..e6 players, a KIA-style closed is a bit more effective and vs. ...d6 players the Rossolimo or related lines make slightly more sense, though I freely admit I'm working from a rather narrow sample size of hazy personal experience.

I recall GM Davies released a chessbase video DVD on using offbeat moves like 2.Na3 against the Sicilian. Whenever I play against the sicilian in blitz and try to play theory moves, I find almost every opponent breaks book anyway, so it's not a big factor to memorize 40 trillion moves until you're dealing with masters.

i myself like the knight e2 idea but that usually would transpose for me anyway , because open sicilian is all i could come up with lol

Try the Grand Prix Attack.

Look on YouTube for videos on how to play it.

The Tal's gambit is a very strong counter to the grand Prix

very good idea the tals sacrifice, that bothered me the most but i guess for masters its no problem

has anyone read the sharpest sicilian. Even though it covers the most played opening it says it covers middle game plans and everything. I would like to know if it was a marketing bluff or if its really an instructional book?

i always thought chess is much harder then rocket science

i am 1490 in fide & undefeated with the alapin (even beat one of the most talented youngster in greece who was rated 1800+)

About smith-morra: Bent Larsen, commenting in a game Smith (the inventor played) annotated: 1. e4 e6? Better is 1...c5 , which wins a pawn.

Im a sicilian player myself and personally i feel that the only opening i have a bit of trouble with is the grand prix attack the alapin is easy to beat the mainline system are also valid like the english attack against the Najdorf is one of the best tries for white

If you play against the Sicilian or play the Sicilian Defense you have to study a book called Sacrifices in the Sicilian. This is an old book in English Descripitve notation which shows you the standard sacrifices that can occur in the middlegame on either side of the board.  I found this book useful when i played against the Siclian and when I played the Sicilan Defense. In the Sicilian Dragon variation Black often times plays the R sac on the N at c3 which gives Black a good game. I saw a GM Shirov game who played the White side and did a N sac on the b5 pawn and according to his
notes this was a standard sac on his part. There are other standard sacs
that I do not know about.

Guy I really want to know any Anti-Sicilian for white cause I many often lose when some madarnature play against e4 thankssss!!!!!

Ravithesaiyan1

on 26th move it i think it would be better to play Rg3....any suggestions?

I like to play Nc3, the closed variation because then White has more aggressive chances.
