But if they stop u from playing then what to do ?

Ziryab

I find that such parents don't bring their kiddos to my tournaments nor do they hire me to coach their spawn. Consequently, I don't have to deal with them.

My advice as a parent is that chess is probably interfering with something in your life they feel is important. Take care of that issue and chess will probably be welcomed.

In other words, you're too old to be treated like that...

Tell them to mind their own business. You're an adult; you do whatever you want (provided that you don't suffer from severe mental retardation or maladjustment).

You tell them that chess isn't just a game but a life lesson in patience, planning and problem solving that is applicable to life itself. Remind them that you may be young and yes they are parents but that doesn't automatically mean they know best.

Tell them there are much more destructive ways to waste ones time and that the game of chess strengthens neural pathways. It doesn't involve drugs or alcohol and and no one is going to get hurt, except maybe someones ego.

Lastly, explain that smart minds have chosen to play this game in the past for leisure for a reason. You are your own entity, parents should be respected and obeyed but they aren't 100% right about everything. Just because you are young doesn't make you incapable of understanding the value and the beauty of the game of chess.

Perhaps as a bargain, you can make a deal with them to only play chess after you've completed your chores or your studies. Best of luck.

Lots of people think chess is a waste of time - that doesn't make them right. Some people think life it self is a waste of time, good thing most people don't agree with that premise.

The point is... people are indaviduals and have free will, that's why others should not be telling them what is or isn't a waste of time, unless of course something is a waste of time.

Much of this is based on opinion, one set of parents might go out of their way to teach their child chess from the earliest age and encourage them to play as often as they can. While yet another set of parents frown upon Chess believing it to be 'a waste of time.'

Except that is bullsh*t.

Chess does none of those things.   Chess makes people better at chess and nothing else.

 No i donot agree.

  1. chess improves your decision making ability a lot.In my case it has improved to about 200% and i am not lying.
  2. It increases your concentration
  3. For mental growth in children of young ages  it is extremly useful.

Chess is absolutely nothing more than a game and a waste of time the same way all other bvoard games are.

Monopoly teaches kids just as much as does Chess and so too Parchesi.

 Do you play chess??????
