To be fair, white didn't play it properly. The aim is to recapture on d4 with the e pawn to give the c1 bishop a faster route into the game. Therefore white doesn't play Nd2 when it blocks the defence of the f pawn. When you play as white against the Stonewall Defence, that's one of the tricks that you know about. Obviously the tactic with Nb4 would also be impossible. Against a player who knows how to play it, that kind of thing isn't possible.

could you provide some examples of the "stonewall attack proper"

I don't play it. I'll take a look at it though and offer suggestions, if you wish. I once read a book, chapter or essay about the best way to play against the Stonewall Defence and that specifically mentioned when to take the N on e4 with your bishop and when to play cd, which is if they mistakenly play Nd7, thinking it's a waiting or developmental move. Both were regarded as mistakes by black if they occurred prematurely. It was very helpful and my % of wins against the Stonewall Defence increased dramatically as a result of being aware of the potential mistakes by black.

I think this is the most normal move order.

In a similar position with colours reversed, white's a move ahead and I probably would have played Bf4. I like to take the N there, with the B and then play f3. It smashes black's centre. Don't think it works as black so well, so I wouldn't go for this position, which is probably slightly favourable to white. Not as good for black as the method I showed in my game with REVENGE.

the computer recommends the strong bg4

I don't think it's good. This kind of position is far beyond the engine's capability. Which side will black castle on?

This is a fine way to play as Black, although 8...Bf5 looks stronger than 8...Bh5- the exchange at f5 is not what white wants, as he will have a lot of trouble putting the c1 bishop into play.

Neither are particularly good because white can use the B as a target

Black should be trying to win against the Stonewall attack. I showed the way that is done.

I just played a Stonewall Defence in the Sicilian to defeat 2. e4 yet again in a 5 mins game.

Actually a Botwinnick Stonewall.
