How to respond against 5.f3 in the Sicilian?

It allows for the Maroczy Bind, giving Black an awkward position. It has also appears to score higher than the mainline according to an online database:

How do you respond to this move? 5. ...e5 also scores pretty high for white in the database I used, or is it the best possible move?

Follow Opening Principles:

Control the center.

Develop toward the center.

e5 is good if you know those lines.

g6 allowing the bind is fine.

Qa5+ causes White the problem of how to block.

  1. Qd2 allows Black an easier game due to the exchange.
  2. Nc3 and c3 stops the bind.
  3. Bd2 Qb6 7. Nb3 d5
  4. Bd2 Qb6 7. Bc3 places the Bishop in an awkard place.

If you're brave. d5.  6. e5 Nd7 7. e6 looks dangerous. 7. ... fxe6 8. Nxe6 Qb6 9. Nf8 Rf8 would be fun in a blitz game.

You use the Mexican variation and refute that thing out of the skies.

If you want me to sell you my deep analysis on this thing just say it, I have a book on it with over 400 pages, all lines are covered.

That means very little, especially if the two lines being compared aren't used with the same frequency.

Here's a cautionary tale:

Look up this former main line from the Petroff Defense in a data-base:

Most databases will give that line as dead equal, based on the 50-50 results of the thousands of Master games played in that line.

Then Fischer found 14. Bh6!!

... and everybody stopped playing that line, because nobody could survive that sort of carnage as Black. So the winning percentages in the database were "frozen in" at equality even though the position was dead lost for Black...because nobody dared to play that line as Black anymore, so there were no new games to change the numbers.

first, why do you think Marozy is so good for white?

natural move is e7-e5, so where white knight is going?

usually b3 and this is actually bad because it has no good square to go without annoying his own pieces. e2 - losing to much time, b5 - after a7-a6 will be forced to the edge of board and black has done important a7-a6 move with tempo!

white would play c2-c4 so what, this move should not be good since it puts his own bishop out of game, and will have to castle kingside whereas is already weak on a7-g1. black is in early stage ready for d6-d5, the main break in sicilian....c4 would be attacked by a6-b5, or targeted by Rc8...if white goes f3-f4 plan, than black after e5xf4 would make good counterplay on e file and use free e5 square for his knight....

so many good plans for black!

The line used by Cheparinov is the refutation of 5.f3 (as a winning try, in any case).

good example.

This is Fischer's response. look.

But what's stopping White from:

Which is why a6 is played in the Najdorf?

Black has a fine game after 7...d5 8.exd5 a6!

Does this mean I just wasted my monthly salary on Sergey's book?
DANGIT.

Magnus just played f3 against arguably the best defensive player in the world in the title match. It's sound for white. Maybe not as aggresssive as 5.Nc3 but it avoids mainline theory and MUST be sound or Magnus would never have played it.

You cannot judge from a single "special" game: It was the last one, and Black had to play for a win at any cost.

PJsStudio

It's sound. That's all I said. I'm sticking to my comment.

You just killed yourself dude, get ready for Pfren to play the Analysis card against you. LOL.

9...exd4 is a somewhat risky way to get the bishop pair, but Black can play it safe with an intermediate check.
