ok, so I made a thread earlier called "Indian Advance?"

but then we started getting into an argument about what is "Hypermodern" after this comment was made:

B1ZMARK wrote:

If you play hypermodern you need to learn how to demolish a center. It's an art!

 so then this happened

I wouldn't say KID is Hypermodern

this is hypermodern

Bruh KID is hypermodern

KID is just modern, not hypermodern

Is there even a difference between modern and hypermodern ? What is the difference in approach ? There are just two approaches ....a classical one and a modern/hypermodern one as far as I know

so now I am making a seperate forum for this arguement

sndeww

define modern and hypermodern.

sndeww

as far as I know modern style doesn't exist; it's always been hypermodern.

Look u dont get a simple thing. Modern and hypermodern are the same thing.

I'd call it hypermodern, although I'm pretty sure it was developed a decade or two after the Nimzo/ Grunfeld.  Seems to check all the boxes though as far as letting white grab the center and then countering it in some way.

Since so many openings nowadays borrow ideas from each other, is that label even all that relevant anymore?

also no need to look at anons notes, I will just put what i said here

MISTER_McCHESS: "Well, since hyper means more than normal, I suppose Hypermodern means more modern than usual"

Anonymous_Dragon

So now u know that both of them are the same thing .....

sndeww

that's not a thing. Hypermodernism means: control the center, but not necessarily by occupying it with pawns. If you put pawns in center: classical. If you don't, hypermodern. ez claps

by that definition, are the Nimzo and Alekhine Hypermodern?

sndeww

yes.

sndeww

Nimzowitch classifies those in his article "on the hypermodern revolution"

interesting. Why do you think it is called hypermodern if there is no modern? just curious, because generally when hyper is used as a prefix, it means more than usual:

examples:

  • Hyperaccelerated (More accelerated than normal)
  • Hyperintelligent (More intelligent than normal)
  • Hypersensitive (More sensitive than normal)
  • Hyperactive (More active than normal)
  • etc.

A specialist is someone who specializes in something.

A astrologist is someone who studies the stars.

Why isn't a racist-
