I need a good opening against d4!!!

I like playing gambits, simply because they are fun, and as black I have been okay playing the French against e4, but I am not happy with what I can do against d4.  Any opening repertoire suggestions???

I like the Grunfeld. Generally produces dynamic positions and often opportunities for counterplay for black. Have enjoyed on occasion the almost tangible feeling of discomfort from my opponent OTB when I've played the generally less familiar (at least at club level) 3 ... d5 instead of an expected ... Bg7 and the KID.

Budapest Gambit.

I have tried grunfeld and budapest gambit (both pretty good), I have never tried benko gambit, tarrasch, and I tried to do English when I was much lower rated and stumbled upon that opening but maybe I should relearn it.  Thank you for all the suggestions

old or modern (not czech) benoni is my d4 reponse

I knew it was the english defense (as I once tried the english opening).  The benko gambit looks very interesting.  I learnt the benoni too as a result.  I think I may stick to the benko gambit and learn it in more depth.  I may still look at a few others.  Thanks guys for the many suggestions. happy.png

People are probably no longer viewing this but I have recently decided kings indian attack is awesome with f4 and g4...  Thanks for all the suggestions but I think I will stick with kings indian.  Benko gambit was also very good

Glad you're happy with the KID. If you do ever want to try another opening, I'd recommend trying the Dutch Defense (1. d4 f5). Because you play the French, you could also start with 1. d4 e6, which avoids some of the Anti-Dutch lines (the only "downside" to this is that White can play 2. e4 when you're in a French Defense). But if you like the KID, I'd stick with it as jumping from opening to opening cannot be too good. happy.png
