I was watching some St. Louis Chess Club videos but every one that Finegold does he is constantly ridiculing and mocking the audience.  Extremely off putting.  Does he just have a poor sense of humor or is this his personality?  Yasser's videos on the other hand are top notch, he is kind, informative, and pleasant.

He’s just kidding around.  Me personally, I think he’s very funny.  He makes chess fun, okay.

In one video, he joked around about how he needed to take up that brand of humor mantle now that Don Rickles had past on.  Admittedly, he is an acquired taste, so to speak.

I agree 100 percent.  I've got a new phone that doesn't have a percent key on the whole keyboard do you believe that sh1t?

  • Anyway his banter with the audience is obviously with kids he knows well. He knows their names and how they play chess and that is cool and it's obvious that he has connected with those kids.

I would contribute to a GoFundMe for a nearly shot-for-shot remake of Charles Barkley's (US basketball player) "I am not a role model"commercial  with Ben Finegold playing the role of Charles Barkley:

Black and White.  Same editing style.

Ben:  I am paid to wreak havoc on a chess board and teach others to do the same.

Just because I am a Grandmaster, doesn't mean I should raise your kids.

"So that rook like me is?" Class: "Overloaded", laughter. Finegold: "Hopefully you at home didnt hear that. If you didnt, he said overworked."

I dont laugh often in chess videos. So personally i think this guy is a genius. And quite sensible if you give him a chance.

Hey Ben, if your reading this.  I really enjoy your videos.  They teach me a whole lot and I even get to chuckle every now and again..  Your teaching methods may be unorthodox,  yet they are clever and effective.  I have been playing chess for nearly a week, and already i beat everyone I know in real life With Ease...  wink.png   You keep coming up with these great lessons, & I'll keep watching!

In my opinion, Ben Finegold is a humourous/funny guy who uses his humour to keep kids entertained, he is a  strong chess player, i know that because i have played him many times.

I guess next we will be saying that football coaches should be careful not to tell their players that they run like spastic wounded cattle because it is too insulting or that drill sergeants should quit yelling insults at trainees because it isn't nice. . A coach or a teacher needs to not be your parent and tell you that you are great no matter what. Instead, they need to tell you like it is, where you need to improve and that where you are totally deficient you need to get your act together and I mean now and quit whining. They need to know that if they don't bring something more than a thin skin to the party, then they just are not going to make it in life.  If they don't want to learn chess, then that is different. Let them watch the Teletubbies where they will be safe from anyone goading them to improve, and keep them locked up in mother's chamber.

Well now we know your side of an argument that no one here is having.  Thanks for blessing us with your wisdom anyway..

Since I spend plenty of time complaining about inadequate forum moderation here, I must take the time to acknowledge the very appropriate and speedy banishing of the troll.  Thank you.

I've see him do much worse, with kids he didn't know at all.

Specifically me.,
