Is it necessary to study your ass off to break 2000?

Yes Urk, course you knew that. I met a 2000 player when I played semi pro poker and we talked some. Yep, he devoted lots of time to reach 2000 OTB. He got burned out at chess and went to poker. I got burned out at poker and went to chess. I think he almost went crazy trying to push it to 2100-2200....another reason going to poker.

A good coach(expert or master) can get you close. All you need is 1 white opening known very well and a solid defense. A little time with tactics. Endgame knowledge. Mix Well. POof

The short answer is no - but it depends on your definition of study. Knowledge is only loosely related to chess performance, which is why you see kids winning a lot of games against masters who've been playing their whole lives.
You need to "get" chess, and it will not be that hard to improve quickly. For many people, they will never get chess, and no matter how hard they study, it doesn't seem like they'll improve.

I just started to do chess again after 45 years, I can tell you that the learning tools you have now are so far beyond just having books. Years ago chess at club levels and below was just people who really did not have a comprehensive learning course. Computers makes a huge difference for learning if you had no really good chess coach. My high school chess coach was not able to beat me. He was just a duffer who was wiling to drive us to chess games. Internet and computer chess make learning much much much easer.

yes,im 2300,and playing chess is so much better then playing at an amatuer level, even though GM consider me weak, lol.
