Is the Traxler Variation Unsound?

Yes, because one move is proof of anything...the advantage is rather small. How do you improve on Anand's loss to Beliavsky in Linares 1991?
Schussler annoted this game for chessbase: After 14.Rg3 White was much better, and after 20.Rg5 White was even winning.

Tarrasch understood 4. Ng5?! is not very good move, but he didn't know exactly why. Today, we know: black can play 4. ... Bc5! (Traxler).

Except that white is better of course.

In my (not alone) opinion, Traxler is 100% sound.
Yes, white may appear seemingly better, but has to defend accurately to secure a draw.

It is matter of taste. I used to play both and both give black enough for sacrificed material.
IMO, black should play 3. ... Nf6 and not 3. ... Bc5 to avoid Evans.
The real problem with black is that above certain level, 90% of white opponents prefer Ruy.

Why avoid Evans? It's a playable opening but nothing to "avoid." I'm personally more afraid of a prepared fried liver player.
