LEAVE ME ALONE. I expect a certain amount of trolling on this site from certain people.

You are a National Master in his 60s who is harassing me and trolling, without contributing anything to the thread. If you want to address how to learn 1.e4 e5 thoroughly, please be my guest. If you want to talk about history of the Ruy Lopez or whatever it is called now, go for it.

Otherwise, find something more constructive to do. I have had discussions with multiple people about you and other remarks you have made which they do not care for (prive discussinos), and if you do not stop harassing me you will not like Part 2. There are little kids reading this, and you should be settting an example instead of wasting everyone's time. Again, I consider this harassment. Is there anything that is not clear to you?

Do not continue down this path. Stop the wise cracks. Stop the harassment. Act your age and stature. That's a fair warning.

Don't threaten me and I am not harrasing you and if you read all of my comments in here I have made some contribution . You don't have the courtesy to answer any of my questions and yet you expect me to do as you say ?  Who do you think you are ? I dont have to do as you say ... just block me if you dont want me commenting in your threads ... no skin off my nose .  My point to you is that if you spend 50% of the time you spend talking about studying chess actually studying chess you might improve your level of play . Its far better to know a few openings deeply than it is to know a bunch of them half assed ...

I'm too busy responding to your rude nonsensical posts with silly emoticons. Shouldn't you be working toward GM or something. Why are you so fascinated with me? I'm an advanced beginner trying to learn? You are a National Master, and must have more maturity within you. I've seen other posts you have written that have great advice. You know your chess. Why not be nice and share some of that instead of ridiculing me? Does it make you feel like a big man?

>> Its far better to know a few openings deeply than it is to know a bunch of them half assed

OK. That makes sense. I'll buy that.

Even better, know a few openings deeply and be familiar with other major openings. Then eventually learn some more deeply if you get really competitive and higher up in rating.

If you have any wisdom you would like to impart, I'm all ears. If you want to ridicule me it is a waste of your time and my time.

Any specific advice on my original question (sans insults please)?

Right - currently. Likewise with modern English books - usually always "Spanish" instead of "Ruy Lopez" - but the change has been mainly in the last decade or two over here.

Has that always been the case, though? I thought I'd read some old books referring to "l'ouverture de Ruy Lopez" or somesuch. Is it possible that that could have been from a Belgian source?

I know the continent's naming changed before anywhere else, and of course we on this side of the Atlantic - at least in North America - are always the last, and USA last of all.

Just checked the old Le Lionnais book Les prix de beauté aux échecs from 1939 and he uses "Partie Lopez" rather than "Partie Espagnole".

In Cheron' 1970 Nouveau manuel d'échecs du débutant, he says in the index "Partie espagnole ou Lopez". So you're probably right there was a switch at some time - not sure yet when it happened Smile

DON'T INVOLVE in conversation with offensive people. I once reported a guy who behaved so and wrote an offensive forum. His forum and account were deleted. So simply.

Chicken_Monster

I'm not reporting anyone. Yet.

When titled players give chess advice, I try to listen, even if sometimes they say things I don't want to hear or strongly disagree with...

Chicken_Monster

You might want to read this rude comments made at the beginning of this thread, which I consider to be harassment.

I take advice from anyone with more experience than I. I don't put put up with trolling and disrespect and harassment. Title or no title. Period.

I have known NM Reb for a very long time on this site.  He offers great advice and is very knowledgeable.  I cannot speak on NM Reb's behalf, but I think it is frustrating for him (and others, myself included) to see someone on the forums continuously asking for advice on openings when it is obvious from their play that openings is the very last thing they should be focusing on.

But in Chicken's defence, he has stated numerous times on this thread (and some others) that he is not interested in advice.  He just wants more and more opening suggestions and recommendations.  I think we should just respect that and let him enjoy chess in the way he chooses. Smile

When defending 1.e4 with 1...e5, what do folks think of the following paradigm?

Ruy Lopez (OK Spanish ...whatever you wan't to call it. Rodriguez Looney. I don't care.)

Going with something not overly ambitious but perhaps very sound...such as, for example the Closed Ruy Lopez Chigorin.

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. O-O Be7 6. Re1 b5 7. Bb3 O-O 8. c3 d6 9. h3 Na5 10. Bc2 c5 11. d4 Qc7

Then if White plays 12.a4, 12.d5, 12.b4, or the main line 12.Nbd2

Black has several potential responses. One may respond with Petrosian sub-variation 12...Bd7

Other common responses could be

12...Be6, ...Rd8, ...Re8, or ...Bb7...not sure why Bd7 is better or worse than the others, or if any of you folks can shed some light on it...

would there be an advantage of one over the other, and why?

Would the Berlin be better that the above, and why? I don't have a deep understanding of all of this yet obviously, but I will eventually.

If you feel this is being overly ambitious, then perhaps we can dumb it down.

Other options? Berlin Wall trading Queens?

Chicken_Monster

OK, that was very clear. Thank you. I understand what you are trying to convey.

From what you have shown thus far, the Berlin (up to this point anyway) seems clearly better. Why is the main line 3...a6? Sorry if my question is a bit myopic. This is new to me.

Is there a potential advantage to sticking with the main line 3...a6 instead of playing 3...Nf6 and going into the Berlin?

Chessbase is just a program which can include many many different things like opening books or a database about your games. The MEGA database is the newest and biggest database/game collection ever. It includes information about players, their games and so on. This MEGA database is opened in the chessbase program. I´m not sure if it works but mabye one can send it per mail?

Thanks for the explanation. I did not realize the above. I'll just buy a package at some point, including Fritz probably, but thank you. I'll get the whole set-up if I end up getting into competition. I'll probably try a USCF tourney sometime later this year or next...find the worst person to play against...and get crushed by a nine-year-old. Smile How emasculating that will be.

Till_98

lol dont worry, I know someone who is 10 and 2100 FIDE Laughing

Till_98

I use the MEGA for my own game preparation. You just put in the name of your opponent and it will show you the games he played, so you can prepare against his opening lines whatsoever.

Chicken_Monster

That is awesome. Well, I guess there is a flip side to that coin. Everyone can figure out your opening repertoire. I don't know how it works, but I would imagine only people with ratings of at least a certain level are in it? For example, would someone rated only, say, 1200 be in the database? Is it only FIDE ratings? USCF? All major national chess organizations?

That's better than Carlsen at the same age. Not bad.

Till_98

yes hes one of the best in the world

Till_98

no, it isnt sorted by ratings. It depends on your games. Only games of certain tournaments or other events will get in the MEGA database. When a 1200 plays in a big open tournament you will find games of him.
