That game is a Pirc Defense, not a Modern Defense. Modern begins with 1.g6

In either case, Black's best plan is a c5 and eventually b5 pawn break. 9...h5? was a mistake. Better was 9.h6 and then Black will need a b5-break stat.

EDIT: For the first game, it looks better for White, IMO.

well, tbf they r called pirc modern systems because they normally reach similar positions,

but pirc usually has knight on f6 and modern has more flexibility so imo it looks more of a modern

They don't call them the Modern anymore...imagine how silly this will sound in 50 years. It's now known as the Robatsch Defence.

There is a very good player and a Master level player who play at the park who both like the Modern. It is VERY flexible, and you need a pretty solid understanding of positional chess to make it work from what I can tell. The Master level player told me that his biggest fear with the Modern is when white deveops his pieces quickly. He doesn't have much trouble taking down big pawn centers with the Modern . . .
