if you respond with e5 you are in an inferior kings gambit which i think is a big yawn.
Can you post the position?
London System, Exchange French/Caro, Giucco Piano, Three/Four Knights Games, Stonewall Defense, etc.
I'm not really a fan of the Ruy Lopez. I find it a draw-fest.
Though, the French Exchange doesn't have to be boring. All Black has to do, to keep it interesting, is castle to the opposite side of White.
If White castles short, Black castles long. If White castles long, Black castles short. Then the game stays dynamic.

Any specific line of Ruy Lopez?
Like Berlin?
At the Gm level, definitely, the Ruy is a draw fest, but I think it is quite interesting and fun, especially if you don't know the theory.
Also, the main line of the Petrov leads to exchange french like positions, but they are harder to play

Yes, the Berlin Defense gets my vote.

I mean, yes, the Ruy is excellent. It's a top-shelf opening. I suppose I just get bored with how equal everything seems to be.
It's like watching an American Football game where both teams have impenetrable defensive lines. Nobody scores. And while the level of play is high, it's just not that exciting to watch.
That's kind of how I feel about the Ruy.
