I wonder what that number (I usually see +1 or +2) beside the captured pieces below the board (or above, in the opponent area). Please, what does this number mean? Thanks.

Usually the number besides the capture pieces is the material count!
8 pawns = 8 points
4 minor pieces = 12 points
3 major pieces = 19 points
