openings for a positional player

hi, I have been playing for a few months but I think I understand that I am a player who is better at positional play. At the moment I play the Polish opening with white (I know it's not considered the best but at the moment I'm more than good so please don't judge me XD) While with black I usually play Caro-Kann after 1.e4 but I have not yet found a defense that I am comfortable with after 1.d4. as you can read from the title I am looking for a positional opening (for both white and black) to focus on until I feel ready to take other steps forward and study other openings more deeply. Thanks in advance to everyone!

for white i would recommend 1.c4, as it is often a positional game, and avoids aggressive/tactical options that black has. For black i don't really know a good positional opening, maybe the against 1.e4 play the french (1.e6)or against 1.d4 try the slav. again i dont know how positional the french or slav is but it is worth a look.

My first suggestions would be Queen's gambit declined and the Slav. Both are solid and positional openings and not too dissimilar to the Panov attack of Caro-Kann, which you should be familiar with.

I like the Slav, about the queen's gambit it depends on black and not on me so idk

I'm a more positional player to and i had good experiences with the larsen's opening which is both solid and positional and for black with the queens gambit accepted. The QGA is kind of easy to play and you don't have to learn tons of theory. I also play the caro kann against e4

mrfreezyiceboy

qg, english, and the curoken

DasBurner

Catalan or QGD Exchange variation as white, Caro as black vs e4 and Semi-Slav (positional I think?) vs d4 as black

The english opening will do it, there are many interesting lines where you can keep much of the pieces on the board, double double fianchetto the bishops and build a long term plan to attack.

indeed. If you're a beginner just how do you know you're "positional"? I'm sorry. I cannot say from any opening played that you can be self-proclaimed as positional or otherwise. I believe everyone is both. In certain percentages after awhile regardless of opening played. Just sayin. You either choose to play positionally in certain positions or not. Certain times you see a tactical solution. Only experience and practical play in alot of games will more or less determine your vice.

Caro-Kann and Slav Defence for black, Queen's Gambit for white.

The English is as tricky as it is sound. For beginners, the most suitable openings are those where you have a clear plan and are rewarded for carrying it out, which is why gambits, even the slightly dubious ones, are advisable for new players. The English is kind of the opposite — even if you make your plan work, there’s no guarantee of an advantage. And it takes skill and experience for your plan to work as intended.

I’d recommend positional lines in classical openings. The Caro is no doubt fine. Against 1.d4 the Indian Defenses (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6), including the Nimzo-Indian and the Queen’s Indian, are sound and versatile.

For the White side, play 1.e4 with confidence, and reply to major defenses with positional lines:
1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 (or d6) 3.Bb5;
Exchanged Ruy Lopez against 1...e5;
Advance Variation against the French;
And main lines against the rest of 1st moves.

I am a positional player. My repertoire is:

Black:

-------

Against e4, c5. - if Nf3, Sicilian Kan. If Smith Morra - I accept and defend - a6 h6 d6 (-Kan). if Alapin - d5. if Nc3 (Grand Prix) - g6, d6 - "dragodorf".

Against d4, - it's hard. currently Nimzo-Indian with b6 fianchetto.

Against c4 -  e5 with regular kingside development works great for me.

Against Nf3 - d4, because they usually want to play King's Indian Defense as White, and I don't mind going for it (there are many attacks against it).

---

White - 1.c4

against most, simply the Catalan - d4 g3. you may also choose a 'Botvinnik System' in the English, depends what Black's doing.

---

Sidelines:

Against 1.g3, b3 - grabbing space.

Against 1.f4 (Bird) - d5, double fianchetto, 0-0, pawn-pushing.

Against 1.Nc3 (Van Geet?) - d5, d4 if possible, and e5.

Against 1.b4 - Polish Defense - e5, we both take pawns, develop Nc6 at some moment - gaining tempo on the bishop on e5.

Against 1.g4 (- The Nonsense Defense) - d5.
