Hey, my favorite opening so far is definitely the Caro Kann because I love to positional play and solidity of the opening. However when playing anything other than that I'm having trouble! Currently I play the KIA and the QID but I'm not having much luck with it so I was wondering if there are similar openings to the CK which I should look into!

Semi-Slav and London system. More or less the same pawn structure. Both of them solid.

KID and Nimzo are both great openings, but very different from Caro-Kann. I'd stick with slav and London

usually when i play online and when i face someone playing London system, i can be sure he/she will play (for the rematch) Caro Kann or Petroff. Same reverse, when i face a CK player...

They just want a solid game. For me they just want to avoid a fight but that's another story ^^

However, these openings are really different.

Playing KI would be the last choice if u want something easy and solid.

How is solid synonymous with easy?

London has a pretty much instant draw variation, so I don't encourage it. Slav is very effect though

Thank you, is it necessarily worse to prefer more positional-style openings and setups?

Not necessary but you can

hey are ratings are twins which means you probably want to ignore this comment, but as someone that plays with the same ideas I will tell you what I started doing. I just started playing 1.c3 2. d4 and I am so committed to them I queue them blind. there is not actually any 2 move refutations to it that I've encountered. it's basically do what ever you want I'm doing c3d4 then I will try to win by having played the position more. if you Google around you will find that high level players have said it's not that it is bad it is just not clear why white wouldn't play 1.d4 and reserve 2.c3 for something they like. fair. so maybe that is better advice =) ... regarding if it plays like the Caro kann though. I would guess 50 percent of the time it plays like the advanced variation reversed, 25 percent of the time black plays c6 or c5 and exchanges c pawns and it feels much different and then 25 percent of the time black declines to be white down a tempo and doesn't go for a big center so you are compelled to take a big center which doesn't feel like the Caro kann at all. ... so what do I get out of it? ive found my time management is improving by unifying white and black side themes. Your mileage may vary. and maybe also take advice from better players. but it's fun finding a kindred spirit
