White- Epic Fail
Black- Epic Fail
I have yet to face it OTB. Most 1e4 players don't know how to handle it. They see Black's seeming passive play (not playing in the center) and they freak. They want to steamroll black with pawns and punish s/he for his/her audacity, but its not that simple.
I used to play the Pirc as black in an attempt to get King's Indian types of positions because I played 1.Nf3 as white. However, my results were never very good because I wasn't up to date with the theory of the opening. The Pirc can be tough to play without good defensive technique but overall I enjoyed it.
In tournament play :
As white : 2 wins, 0 losses, 0 draws
As black : N/A
Here's the two games I played as white :
Pirc requires a lot of study, especially in the main lines. There are often tactical shots which are essential to surviving that would be very difficult to work out over the board.
I love this opening. So much depends on Black's precise move order. Check out the games of Seirawan and Chernin to see some pirc masters at work.
Honestly, I have never really used the defense and maybe never will. But when having to play white (Im an e4 player btw) against it I usually go for more positional play and try to make tactical shots such as dsachs pointed out. Here is what I'll mainly do. . .
My record with the Pirc B07 - B09
As White + 3 (50%) - 2 (33%) = 1 (17%)
As Black + 20 (63%) - 9 (28%) = 3 (9%)
As White +5 =1 -4, against more or less equally rated opposition, mostly about ten years ago when I was playing 1.e4.
As Black +8 =3 -4 against higher rated opposition, played mostly in the years around 1995 when I was an improving 16xx playing the Pirc.
My OTB Results=
Win-3/4
Loose-1/4
Draw-0/4
The perk is a style for black to gain a defensive castle!
The pirc is only viable in time controls under 10 minutes since it easy for white to use the space advantage gives white pretty much total control and even though blacks not losing black is always going suffer at a bad position for the rest the game
Hi!
My OTB (Classic) results as Black: +5, -3, = 1, with a winning rate of 62.5% over 8 games
On Chess.com I have a fair 47% winning rate over 400+ games after 1.e4, d6 2. d4, Nf6.
I agree the Pirc is fun, sharp and full of tactics. But you need to know a lot of theory. That is why I switch most of the time to the Modern move order 1.e4, d6. 2.d4, g6 with which I have 48 % winning rate over 500+ games.
Good luck!
When I play the Pirc as black in OTB, my percentages are:
Win- 66.7% (2/3)
Draw- 0.0% (0/3)
Lose- 33.3% (1/3)
I have never faced the Pirc when I was playing white.
Please post your percentages when the Pirc comes up when you are white or black seperately. (OTB games only please)
For those of you that do not know what the Pirc is, see the thingy below:
