Reti Opening: Aggressive variation

Here is a variation in the Reti opening that I came up with:

basically instead of playing the main line 3.e3 you play the more aggressive 3.e4

This can lead to a powerful attack if black is not careful, like this:

It's kind of like a fried liver, but there is no D pawn. so it's more powerful!

(I have included a line where the best move for white is to move the king to the open!)

If your opponent tries to control d4 with c5 and Nc6:

This is the best line for black. I recommend this gambit against it:

Pros:

Leads to aggressive games with lots of tactics.

A ton of traps

leads to a powerful attack

has a high win rate

Cons:

Not a lot of theory

Creates a weakness on d4

Your opponent has many ways of responding

they have to take the c4 pawn which is uncommon

You can make any line look good when you play terrible moves for Black.

Some common sense here. White has severely weakened d4. However, Black will not try to hold the c-pawn, and so White will have a Bishop on c4. Black has not committed to e5, so let's do it for White to give him an attack on f7. PA-LEEZ!

Your 3.e4 does not lose, but it gives White nothing!

1.Nf3 d5 2.c4 dxc4 3.e4 c5! 4.Bxc4 Nc6!

Total domination of d4 WITHOUT weakening f7. Now something useless like 5.Ng5 can be answered by 5...e6.

Thanks for your feedback!

Yes, this is the best line for black. how about this interesting gambit with 5.b5

The_Cool_Chess_Player

I have updated it and added pros and cons!

Wow very interesting gambit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If black plays anything else they are loosing due to lack of space. But what if they decline the gambit?

The_Cool_Chess_Player

If black plays a random move then yes you can gain a lot of space with 6.bxc5 and 7.d4.

They can decline it with 5.e6 but it blocks the LSB and is a bit passive.
