Recently came across this in the Ruy Lopez. How can white maintain his advantage if...

I've recently started liking the Ruy Lopez a lot, but I've never come across a game in which Black takes the middle like this.  After analyzing these games, though, I can't really find anything wrong with d5 for black.  Why is it rarely seen?

on your first diagram 8.exd5 Qxd5  9.Bxc6 (couldn't do dxc6 because of d5 earlier) Qxc6 10.Nxe5 ... give a small edge for white.

on your second diagram d6 is better than d5 so is can support your e-pawn.

Oh, thanks for the explanation for diagram one :).  Seems that white wins a pawn if they don't chase your bishop back at all.

But... what if they chase it back to the square shown on diagram #2, and then play d5?  You said "d6 is better," but what happens if they play d5 as shown?

one possible line.... 10.exd5 e4 11.Bxe4 Nxe4 12.Rxe4 ...
