While surfing the web on the Scandinavian Open, I found on 365chess.com that in (on the website) recorded games black has won 31 percent of games after exd5. White has a recorded 41 percent. Considering that this opening has always been my go to response to 1. e4 ever since I watched a local IM use this defense against 3 other IMs on my own board when I was young, it was a little upsetting to find out that this opening might not be sound for Black. The posting of comments, high-rated games, variation, etc is appreciated.

black has won 31 percent of games after exd5. White has a recorded 41 percent.. Doesn't this mean that black scores 45% (31+0.5*(100-31-41)). This doesn't look like a very discouraging score.

The Center Counter/Scandinavian can be played up to about the 2300 level but after that White will probably know the refutations.

I guess you could say the scandinavian is just as unsound as the ponziani ;)

Ponz has already answered this statement Ruben. Ponz claims the only reason people think the ponziani opening is unsound is because SGM's are playing terrible moves at move 5. I believe it was move 5 or 4 it was def an opening mistake.

Those SGM's think they can just be so Super and mindlessly wing there way through an opening. Well they have a big surpise waiting for them. Big surpise! Ponz and Roman Dzindzichashvili are on to them.

Comparing the Scandinavian opening against the Ponziani opening outragious Ruben. Its like comparing a Little Honda vs a Rolls Royce.

They bring there queen out on move 2 in the Scandinavian open. They can not get away with Breaking chess principles like this.

They think becuase there 2700 they can just make any move they want HAHA. Well there wrong. Ponz and Roman are on to them. Its as clear as the nose on your face.

Sure, they can't.

World's #1 played 2...Qxd5 3.Nc3 Qd8 against world's #2 at the Tromso Olympiad. He couldn't possibly get away with this, right? Well... he won.

That is exactly why when you hear people talk about there favorite GM of all time they never include Magnus carlsen. The chess community cried that day in Tromso.

Breaking Chess Principles like this outragious!

Is this Qd8 variation supposed to be some sort of Caro-kann defense where you avoid certain lines? (For example no advance variation in this case)

"Breaking Chess Principles like this outragious!"

Chess principles are important, but they are not absolute. It works tactically, has some ideas, the position is not open, therefore playable.

I can't answer your question fully but after 3. Nc3, Qd8 is the 3rd most popular reply in the Scandinavian. Qa5 and Qd6 are the 1st and 2nd.

Didn't Anand use this opening in a world title match?

I think Kasparov used the Scandinavian to beat Anand!

WRONG!

Game 14 of the 1995 World Championship Match saw Anand use it against Kasparov, got a significant advantage (Was -/+ at one point), but made a late middlegame blunder that caused Kasparov to win that game, which was the last game he won in that match, winning 4 games in a 5-game stretch after drawing the first 8 and losing the 9th.  The match concluded with 4 draws, Kasparov winning 10.5-7.5.  Games 19 and 20 weren't played.

I would imagine that bringing the queen out early in the opening isnt that bad, as long as you get to a playable middle game - regardless if youre breaking opening principles.

Don't mind me!

This is a position from a scene in a movie that probably won't be out for a few years called Double Earth. The scene will also be featured in the trailer. The movie is set in an alternate earth future that is merged with our earth's past. The movie is basically an excuse to have a bunch of very famous historical figures all in the same ridiculous movie that doesn't even take itself seriously. In the scene, Ghandi and Hitler are playing chess in London. Ghandi makes one move and exclaims "Checkmate".

This opening, by the way, is called Luigi's Opening. It's an alternate second move for white that avoids all exd5 lines. Black is best advised to transpose into a caro-kann. I believe Carlsen has a game with it, but the best he got was a draw. I showed it to my teacher and he really liked it, so he played with it a bit and invented the kind of setup featured in this game.

But such rules could always be ended with: unless you have a good reason to do so.
