Sicilian Defense: Alapin Variation, Barmen Defense

I think the normal Alapin with 2.c3 is such a sad continuation as white.

Even though 2...d5 and 2...Nf6 have been played alot against the Alapin.

I believe 2...e6 going into a French Defense is the better continuation for black.

I really don't see how white can agrue for such a huge advantage in that position.

Furthermore, I am very curious to know what the stats are on

The Delayed Alapin vs The Normal Alapin.

I think the Delayed Alapin has better results/scores than the Normal Alapin.

I would not be surpised if in the next couple of years the Alapin dies out and the Delayed Alapin starts a huge rise.

However, this is just my opinion on what I think will happen in the future which no one knows what the future will bring etc.

the alapin has very respectable score at high level. especially if the right players are playing it. rozentalis scored significantly better than average open sicilian...sveshnikov scored decently but not as well...but you have to remember sveshnikov was trying the alapin against the very best players such as kasparov. kramnik would have played the alapin more but he gave up on 1e4. as far as the french is concerned it makes little difference to me personally if black plays it on move 1 or move 2 i do the same sort of stuff against either. i dont think theres anything magical about delaying the alapin its fine as a practical choice if there are certain lines you prefer to avoid but i dont see how the normal sort of positions you get are necessarily better. the alapin isnt an attempt to refute the sicilian its just a good way to get a different sort of middlegame which some players might prefer and be better with

Well I guess in my mind I believe 2...e6 in response to 2.c3 is the critical line for white.

Which if you was to play the delayed alapin with 2.Nf3 there is a good chance you would avoid such a critical line.

For example:

Against 2.Nf3 I would play 2...d6 because I like the Najdorf. However, if 3.c3 is than played. I can no longer play a French Defense.

I am questioning were rozentalis winning stats coming from.

For example:

Is rozentalis scoring better in the Alapin when his opponents play 2...d5 or 2...Nf6

vs

2...e6?

I think many Alapin players have began switching to the Delayed Alapin.

Even people I know who have played the Alapin have stopped playing the Alapin.

I have not seen it on chess.com in a while.

However, I have seen the Delayed Alapin being played alot more lately.

I wonder if in the next couple of months if rozentalis is going to stop playing the Alapin and start playing the Delayed Alapin instead.

i mean if black wants to play a french then i think 1e6 is a more accurate move order but personally i would play the same way against either. nothing about 2 e6 is possibly compromising my repetoire :p

Well If you play the Alapin. I would be very nerves if I was you.

I don't play the Alapin. I play the Open Sicilian. I have nothing to worry about.

1...e6 gives black more problems.

Moves like 3.Nd2 and 3.Nc3 are more harder to deal with I believe.

Against the Alapin move order those lines bascially disappear.

This is the position I am talking about.

yes. i play ed. some people play e5. both give white an advantage. black can equalize against both eventually assuming he plays correctly. after equalizing its just a game...one i probably understand better because quite simply black opened with c5

You have very bold shoulders FOS to go down such a line.

Alot of courage indeed.

Playful_Tiger

Semyon Alapin why did you create this boring opening

Playful_Tiger

Just kidding, it's clearly very interesting and rich, as all this discussion shows.... but I still can't decide what to play against it

oh its not boring. its not the same sort of sabre rattling you would see in open sicilians...its more bob marley pace.

Sabre rattling at bob marley pace is exactly what I like to do to pass the time

Play french style lines against the alapin myself, because play e6 open siclian, actually the Taimanov. The more common attitude is that e6 is a minor concession against both alapin and KIA. I could reach the Taimanov with 1e4 c5 2Nf3 Nc6 but think the 3Bb5 is the most dangerous anti-sicilian personally, so avoid it by playing 2...e6.

Theoretically the two most challenging lines for black against 1.e4 c5 2c3 are supposed to be 2...Nf6 3e5 Nd5 3Nf3 d6, or 2...d5 3pxp Qxp 4d4 Nf6 5Nf3 Bg4.

I think e6 is a minor concession against the KIA. Mainly because it harder to trade the Light square bishop.

However, The Alapin never fianchetto's which makes me think e6 is great move lol. I think the Alapins Light square bishop sucks.
