Sicilian Defense: Taimanov Variation?

I need some help with some opening lines for this opening. I have seen FM Simplechess play it before with 4...a6 and im wondering if it is good or not.

Your rating is 1500 and you can't even identify your openings.  I'd worry about middlegames and endgames if I were you.  4...a6 is the Kan Sicilian, NOT the Taimanov Sicilian.

The Taimanov Sicilian is 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nc6, NOT 4...a6, which again, is the Kan Sicilian.

I might have put it a tad more tactfully but I agree with ThrillerFan's sentiments. Players rated about 1400 -1500 in LIve and Standard Chess should be concentrating on basics like Double KP Openings and Open games not on SD lines like the Kan or Taimanov variations. BUT apparently a lot of us think that studying trigonometry first and arithmetic later on actually makes sense.

I think steamrolling is a minor chess skill, and knowing names and being able to drop them over cocktails will take you further in every circumstance except OTB.

You seem to be missing my point rather badly. First, knowig and being able to parrot chess omenclature is an extremely minor chess skill, of almost no practical value. It's extremely comon to see well-read chess players beig steamrolled by people who never heard of Taimanov or Kan.

Second, I was referring to a previous post where someone made fun of the OP because he was imprecise in naming the variation under discussion saying. "Your rating is 1500 and you can't even identify your openings. " A really inane comment. For obvious reasons, getting your chess nomenclature exactly right is quite unimportant, and mocking people because they called the Kan Variation the Taimanov is just dumb.

i dont really get your ponit still.

GM,

Let's get to the bottom of this.  Yes, that Sicilian, or those move orders for Black in the Sicilian are good.

Also, that move order can be (emphasis on "can be") used to reach the Taimanov Sicilian.  There are TWO major set-ups in this line for Black, the Paulse (characterized by the Qc7 placement) and the pure Taimanov (characterized by Nge7).

The Taimanov Sicilian, with the Paulsen set-up, is considered the most solid or safest Sicilian for Black.  There is an excellent book for it, written by one of the worlds expert on that line.  I highly recommend the opening for Black and the book as well. ( you can find the book here -

The Taimanov is special to me.  I used it to achive a milestone for me in Correspondence chess back in 2005.

Thank You.

Can someone tell me what are the pros and cons of Taimanov vs the Kan?

bladezii

Taimanov can be a lot less passive than the Kan in some variations.  The Taimanov is more promising of achieving equal fighting chances for Black, in my opinion.

Taimanov is a lot more dangerous for White if White decides to adopt a Hedgehog set-up or force Black into a Hedgehog set-up, to be more precise.

Ideas are more important. Anyway I don't know why Black can't just play a6, Qc7 and Nc6 without the intention of playing b5.

The OP asked if the opening sequence shown in the diagram is good, and I would have to agree, its been played by many great players.  But as with every opening, it has its ins and outs (namely the light-square bishop and the dark-squares.) The discussion on the rating of the player is quite irrevelant, he was not asking for a study plan, but instead a very straightforward answer.

TitanCG

I usually play with Nc3, Be3, Bd3 and 0-0 and simply go for f4. It is a simple setup that avoids the positional complications (which are a waste of time to bother with for me at least) and leads to concrete play. Black can get an equal game but at least you'll know what you're doing. If Black plays d5 then you simply play the pawn structure. Either way you always have something clear to work with.

Watch out for tricks on the dark squares - especially ones that target the g1-b8 diagonal and the b-pawn, don't allow Ne5-g4 and losing the bishop on "...Nxd3 cxd3" isn't a big deal as it's just there to overprotect e4.

Luck2Chess

1 e4  c5

2 Nc3 e6

3 d4 cxd4

4 Nxd4 Nc6

5 Nc3 a6

Is the taimanov, apparently play on a few correct opening moves and you'll have the Pure Taimanov.

Sorry for reviving the thread! Cry

It would help if OP's autually asked something worthwhile, or indeed anything at all. Can easily see in opening explorer 4...a6 has been played by GM's so is ok move. If that's all OP wanted to know it's a bit dull.

greenfreeze

if simplechess plays it then it must be good

because it must be simple?
