When I'm Black, I use d5, e6, c6 most of the time and I can manage to sneak a win with that opening. Explore some repertoire opening of some masters or of your Chess idols. And you'll learn from it.
Take the initiative as Black
i play the traxler and the albin gambits for black. the traxler may need a lot of study tho, and with correct defense from white it probably yields no advantage whatsoever - but hey, you are BLACK! similar with the albin, tho i find it more playable in the longer time controls than the traxler, which really is a strong weapon for the bullet and blitz having so many crazy lines.
The Latvian (1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 f5) has probably seen more GM level use than any other gambit against 1. e4 for black.
That is most certainly untrue. I think GM Jonny Hector has played the Latvian perhaps a couple of times, and GM Ivan Sokolov once, but most other GMs steer clear of the Latvian. The Ruy Lopez Marshall Attack 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 0-0 8.c3 d5 has probably been played around 500 times in GM games, and the Caro-Kann Modern Exchange 1.e4 c6 2.c4 d5 3.cxd5 cxd5 4.exd5 Nf6 has been played in close to 400 GM games. The Four Knights Marshall/Rubinstein Gambit 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bb5 Nd4 is another popular black gambit.
