e4 c5 is the sicilian defense.
d4 c5 is the old benoni defense.
c4 c5 is the symmetrical english.
The dutch is d4 f5.

Whoops, I meant f5 for black! My bad.. and c4 for white.. So yeah.. I meant to ask about the dutch not um, the sicilian/ old benoni..
So, an opening move isn't independant of itself? The only way for it to be the "dutch" is for white to play d4?
Yes, but you shonldn't focus on openings right now. Just play the best moves you can think of for now and try to learn from your mistakes.
Right on. But I gotta start somewhere.. what would ya say would be the most "begginer friendly", if there's such a thing.. d4?
typically e4, because it tends to be more open and tactical. As a beginner tactics are extremly important to learn as mucha and as fast as possible, and e4 gives good practice
it is the dutch defense, not just the dutch, the defense means it is an opening response for black, so any defense is at least partially dependent on what white does
That being said, feel free to experiment, just do not stress over getting the first few moves "right", as a beginner against begginers openings hold very little meaning until you start to play solidly overall
Look at your rating. Look at MichaelPorcelli's rating. Look at the immense difference between the two. Listen to whatever advice he gives because of his superior chess playing abilities. END OF DISCUSSION.
umm.. word up. Thanks... and chasm1995.. uhh yeah. That's why I asked the question, of course I'll be taking his advice. Thanks again (both you guys), certainly gave me a new perspective to work with. :)

I disagree, why do people always say e4 is more tactical than d4? Other than the sicilian and a few unsound e4 opening, almost every e4 opening is less tactical than all of the d4 openings.
It might be better for beginners, but if so because I feel like e4 openings have less theory that you absolutely have to know to survive.
I just played e4 in my last few games (on here) and I rather like it, I htink it'll be my rock. Shepi13, I see what you're sayin, I think if/when I get better I'd like to play d4 more often, it seems like it could lead to some fun games. But for now the e4 feels safer, and more comfortable.

When black plays c5. I refer to it as the dutch, but I have no idea if that's what it's actually called.
Anyways, is c5 for black (or c4 for white for that matter) a decent move? I know openings aren't that black and white (no pun intended), but it seems to me that against players with legit skill it's pretty hard to win. But against my friends at home I win fairly easily with it.
I was wondering if any experienced players would pass along some of their wisdom...
