Live chess rating is worth much more than CC rating

Nah, coorespondence shows true chess understanding, in Live chess memory & visualization are more important.  Especially blitz.  I've seen guys with blitz ratings 200-300 points above mine who had lower coorespondonce ratins (often 100 or more points below mine).

I am going to disagree with both of you and take door number three. I don't think either is a better criterion for evaluating chess skill. I think they are just two completely different beasts. Blitz requires skills that cc doesn't, most notably quick calculation, that requires different parts of your brain to fire up. In cc, all this extra time means that deeper ideas of strategy and logic are needed. Why debate 'true chess skill' when the two games are so vastly different?

I know what you mean, though, Narz. My FICS 'blitz' rating is a good 350 points below my 'standard' rating. I think, with age, you gain more chess knowledge but your ability to calculate slowly wanes.

Well firstly, thats not the Mora Smith Gambit, although I think you have pointed that out. Secondly, Qxe4  is not a bad move, but Qd1 is. Qa4 is much betterm similiar to the scandinavian opening, but with an extra tempo.

Uhh, no, that would be 1.e4 e5 2.d4 exd4 3.Qxd4 Nc6 4.Qa4. Then at least, it's a trade of center pawn vs center pawn. But note that Black doesn't usually play a quick ...e5 in the Scandinavian, so it's doubtful whether that extra tempo (used on 1.e4) was useful, if you want to play it as a reverse Scandinavian.

But the case of 1.e4 c5 2.d4 cxd4 3.Qxd4 Nc6 Qa4 just has no relation to the Scandinavian. It trades off a center pawn for a wing pawn without the compensation White usually gets for that in the Open Sicilians. It's just bad.

At least it doesn't lose a pawn Laughing, it's like a slightly worse version of the Scandenavian but from white's perspective.  White pretty much tosses away any tempo advantage he has and then some but it's not the very end of the world.

I like to discuss chess with people who don't degrade people by calling them "idiots."  I will not respond to any of RainbowRising's posts, and I might request that he be temporarily banned from this forum.  Of course, if he apologizes, then everything's okay!  :)

It still seems ironic to have a 1300+ criticizing the rating of a 1700+

I think his point is that he is good at 1 minute games and blitz which makes him far superior to a lot of other posters here in his opinion.
