Just wanna know what y'all think about 1. f4

RockinBroccoli

My mommy, my daddy, and my good old grandpappy don't play it so I don't.

It is significantly weaker than the "Big 4" (e4, d4, c4, Nf3, in no particular order)

"Big 5" since 1. g3 is as good as 1. Nf3, often leading to KIA. settings.pngpeshka.png

1.g3 is slightly weaker because it allows 1...e5.

What was your opponent rated?  1100?

If you defend Dutch Defence 1 d4 f5 as black, then opening 1 f4 as white makes sense: the same with an extra tempo.

Only if Black plays 1...d5 is that true.

In the Dutch, White has committed to d4, weakening e4, and Black controls e4 with 1...f5.

Not the case in Bird's Opening.  Black can play 1...d5 and go for a reverse Dutch, but he is not obligated to, and e5 is not weakened by Black like e4 is by White.  For example, 1.f4 d6.

1.f4 is fine, as far as I'm concerned. You can play ala-Leningrad Dutch against 1...d5, an improved Grand Prix Sicilian against 1...c5, and an interesting double-edged gambit against 1...e5. All that with much less theoretical knowledge than the required one to play 1.e4, 1.d4 or 1.c4.

Magnus gave former World Champion Kramnik the Bird and won!

Obviously Magnus flipped the Bird intentionally on Vlad, and when Magnus won with it, Vladimir was a bit miffed.

I think Magnus would have a mischievous smile at the memory of this.
