I never understood what White got out of offering a pawn with check here, but upon closer inspection, his compensation seems pretty reasonable: he gets the useful move Kb1 "for free", opens the g-file, and will gain another tempo off of the Bg5 with something like Rhg1, Qh5 or h2-h4. The attack on e6 is also pretty annoying.
