Unorthodox Sicilan Defenses

I keep having trouble with players deviating from standard opening theory to combat the lines that I've memorized. In this case, I play the Sicilian as Black:

Strangemover

If I play Sicilian I go 2.e6 not 2.d6 but here I would probably go 3.e6 first, blunting the diagonal, then follow with a6 thinking of b5. Basically emphasise that the bishop shouldn't be on c4 by forcing white to either move it again eg Bb3 or make moves which are not critical but allow white to keep it on that diagonal eg a3 or a4.

Since when the Delayed Bowdler Attack became "unorthodox"? It's just a natural and fine opening. happy.png

Bishop's opening and Bishop's gambit are also "unorthodox" now?

Bowdler Attack has more from Italian opening... then sicilian defense

Yeah, especially when U overcharged your mind with so-called orthodox lines. grin.png Anyway, the delayed Bc4 can naturally appear in many Sicilian variations.

I call it unorthodox because out of the 378,048 Sicilian games in Game Explorer, only 1,473 games have included this variation. That's pretty much the definition of unorthodox.

the reason for this is that people don't like changing their opening. in this case the player likes to play the Italian game. i highly doubt he knows the theory for the delayed bowdler attack so he just play's it like he plays the Italian game. it's quite rare even at ratings 800-1000 but there are people who will play the Italian game against the caro-kann because it's what they're used to. XC20 all your opponent is doing is not knowing the sicilian defence so just plays against it as they would 1...e5. yigor is assuming that people at your level know the sicilian lines inside out like he does ,although i'm surprised that your opponent doesn't know the lines, your just playing someone who plays the super-original and never played before apart from in every single game in online chess, the Italian game.

Yeah, I got your point. happy.png I just wanted to underline that 3. Bc4 is a good and natural move (it's not like 3. Bd3, for example). So, it's a bit exaggerated to call it "unorthodox".

at ratings 800-1000 people still do play that. although most of the time d4 is played.
