Unusual Opening Arrangement

I received a challenge recently and discovered in the middle of the game that the pieces were arranged differently from the traditional opening. The Queens were on file e flanked by the Knights on d and f. The Kings were on c with the rooks on b and g. The bishops were on a and h. Has anyone seen this arrangement before? Throws my game off considerably. How did this opponent set this up?
