Vienna gambit: stuck with a problem

Sort:

In a line of the vienna gambit i encountered this problem: 1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. Qg4 Qf6 5. Nd5 Qxf2 6. Kd1 g6 7. Nh3 Qd4 8. d3, can black just Bb6 so the Queen gets space and can escape?

Does anyone have a clue?

Thanks

In your diagram, in the bottom left corner, there is an icon that looks like a magnifying glass. Click it, and you can use a chess engine to explore various options after 8.d3

In this line black has two problems: (1) the black queen is short of squares and in danger of being trapped; (2) the black king is under pressure from the wNd5 and along the half-open f-file.

It's a chess game. Don't think only of one target, think of the whole position. With 8...Bb6 black makes space for the bQd4, so it's logical to turn our attention to the bKe8. Either 9.Rf1 planning 10.Qf3, or 9.Qf3 planning 10.Rf1 come to mind. Also 9.Ng5 and 9.c3 are plausible. The engine starts out liking 9.Rf1 best, then switches to 9.Qf3, then back and forth, eventually settling on 9.Qh4. But basically white has a wide choice of winning moves, by going after the king black should not escape.

thanks a lot! Yes i know but i wanted to know from a human perspective of there is anyway to trap that queen. But yes the position is more interested in that way yetanotheraoc

Is this the Vienna gambit? I thought you played for at some point.

I don't think this is the Vienna gambit, but I recognize the line you're playing.

The line above is often sold as an easy forced win for white, but it's not really. There's lots of tricky ways for black to continue the game (like the move you mentioned above) where the computer knows that white is crushing but it's not immediatly clear.

Here's another tricky line:
