There is no best opening but complex tricky openings are best avoided by club players. You could do no better than to start by playing the time-honoured e4.

The best way to annoy French Defence players is the Chigorin Variation.
And 2.Ke2 is definitely the best, you win tempo in the endgame and centralize your king preparing for an endgame advantage!

The Sicilian Najdorf variation is said to be the best and most complete opening system. Modern Chess Openings calls it the cadillac of all chess openings.

If you are a grandmaster these answers are correct but when I see low rated players give answers like that, I can't avoid not to laugh.
It's not about what your opponent knows or expect or can handle.It's about what you know and what you can handle and what you expect from yourself.
If you want only to win low level players and stay at the same level for ever , again these are the answers you are looking for, stop searching.But if you expect to improve and play better you should care only to understand and you should try to play with people that expect and can handle the opening you know because that way you will learn it better.
Winning some guys that don't know the opening and played stupid will get you nowhere.Winning some guys that played you the best will help you to understand the plans and the ideas.
If right now I give you a "magic" opening that will help you win your next 20 opponents, because they don't expect it, do you know what will happen?Simple, after 20 wins you will be EXACTLY at the same level.But if I help you understand an opening, you will probably lose from your next 20 opponents but wins will eventually come and they will be the result of your improvement.

Any opening is as good as the other if you know the lines to it. Tactics and board vision are what determines wins and losses, openings, a little, but not so much so long as the other player follows basic principle (develop, go for the center, and castle quickly)
I most often play against the computer and open e4, ..., Nf3 ... But everyone out there that's worth playing against knows all the varations to this so I mostly end up on the loosing side. When I play the black pieces, I am really lost. Will practice the French and Sicilian Defenses to start.

Define "best opening" - Even a discredited opening like the Latvian Gambit may work for some players in Live Chess. I've been playing an opening dissed by IM pfren (and with good reason I'm sure) but so far haven't run into the problems he described that could arise from it - because so far no one inc. a few strong players have played the line he described.
"Best Opening" is too broad to really mean the same thing to most of us - since there are plenty of sound openings to choose from a lot of what's "Best" for us depends on our style, preferences, experience and knowledge of the "best" opening - as in why it's played and what the general concepts are behind it more so than exact "book" lines. .
To give just a few of many possible examples here the Petroff Defense maybe "best" for players satisfied to draw with Black rather than to play something with more winning (and losing) chances but not for players who want to maximize their winning chances as Black in a Double KP Opening. And the PD maybe best for someone who only needs a draw in one game but not best for them in general.
I have found that there are some tricks and traps at the beginining of the game from which there is no recovery possible. So maybe it is best to learn one or two openings, and one or two defense strategies and study them in depth before trying to play in the local tournaments.
Sicilian, Ruy Lopez are both S-tier openings in my opinion.
There's not a best opening yet because chess hasn't yet been solved. But there are certainly rubbish ones. You need to try different variations out and after a while you will find an opening you play well with. But soon you shall feel the awesome might of the Tromp...
