What is YOUR most common chess opening?

My most common opening with white is 1.e4. I find it easier for an amateur to deal with, even if I can still get surprised quite easy cause most of my opponents won't actually play 1... e5 or 1... c5. So I haven't actually studied the French Defense too much, or the Caro-Kann, of which I heard that are pretty solid. Also, don't know almost anything about Scandinavian. However, an open game gives an amateur less to deal it from the very beginning in my opinion.

As black, I prefer 1... e5 to 1. e4, and 1... Nf6 to d4 or even to 1.c4

I know the question wasnt directed towards me, but I answer it anyway. 90 per cent or so at this site opens with e4. It is 2 well known defenses against it. The French defense and the Sicilian defense. Of course there are numerous of ways to defend against e4 but these two are considered to be the best and most common defenses. I myself love to play the Sicilian and dont care to much about the french. This is most of all becouse the french is a bit to defensive for my taste. I recommend to try them out and decide who you prefer. Against the d4 its mainly the KID thats strong and I'll recommend this opening. I struggled a lot when facing the d4 until I learned the KID. I hope this helps you i bit:) best of luck KRTG

WRONG!  The best defense from a theoretical standpoint is actually 1...e5.  Because of it's complications, 1...c5 tends to lead to better results overall, but it, and 1...e6, are not the best 2 theoretically.

In response to 23elena09, I already answered that question.  Last paragraph.  Black I play 1...d6 against anything.  After that, depends on what White does.

What kind of theoretical point of view are you reffering to? The opening explorer here at chess.com?? If thats the case, no wonder e5 scores better than C5-Sicilian due to the fact that most players at lower lvls tend to have a very limited knowledge of openingtheory and simply reply whit a "copy" of whites play. Weak players also tend to learn the sicilian and struggle to play it correctly becouse it it a much more complicated opening than the "copy variation". I dont say 100 per cent sure that I`m right, but I`m certantly not WRONG as you say. If youre so sure e5 are the optimal respons to e4 then please give me something to back it up. Some refferences or something, not just your own statement and oppinion.

How do you play against the pirc? :P and to get a rating as high as yours did you mostly study tactics?

I am really good at tactics... and openings... but not end games :-(

warrior689

The Yogoslav attack and the sicillian najdorf

ekorbdal

My first two moves are -

(1) Set up the pieces.

(2) Pour a glass of wine.

ViktorHNielsen

Dutch against e4, sicilian against d4. As white, e4 is the main topic.

My opponent doesn't know theory after 3 moves.

And with black pieces?

I do random; I rarely play black 2/24 games I played black..

Bill_C

As White, I play into the Queens Pawn games. As Black, if 1. d4 then d5 and if 1. e4, e5 avoiding Sicilian lines and other lines, offering me the the KG, Russian, Spanish and Italian games and other sidelines. 1. d4 for me gives me the flexibility to play into Nimzo-Indian, Queens and Kings Indian Defenses and other lines but this is a matter of taste. Rarely I will play 1. Nf6 since I am not a fan of the Alekhine and Reti games but will almost always play it against 1. c4.

Thanks Bill-C !

e5 is pretty common against e4. think about the: Ruy Lopez, Italian Game, Evan's Gambit, Scotch, and so many others. All of those stem from e5. It is very well known. I've played thousands of games as white, both on and off chess.com, with time controls from 1 min. to around 4 hours. e5 and c5 are about tied for the most common.

TheBlueKnight9

The Kings Indian Attack is ( just showing whites moves ) 1.f3 2.g3 3. Bg2. 4. o-o. Thats how I do it Rose.Hope it works for you!

coalescenet

c5 is about twice as often at the master level

aryanadrian

My openings as white : 1.e4 -> Ruy Lopez, Caro Kann (Panov attack) , French Defense (Monte Carlo Variation) , Sicilian (Alapin)

My Openings as black : 1.e4 -> always 1...e5

1.d4 -> always 1...Nf6 (Nimzo Indian or I can transpose it to QGD)

Pleasure_Paradigm

As white, I always open with e4. As black, I play the Dragon, KID, Pirc.

creepingdeath1974

I have now started with this experimental opening of playing 1.c4 and then 2.f4

Try f4 first followed by g4.
