What well known gambits are unsound?

You know, getting a theoretical position does not mean it is the strongest move.

1.d4 e5 2.e4?? is terrible (relatively speaking.. I'm sure it's equal), because white has such a good position after 2.dxe5, and the Center Game is just meh.

It might be a good thing to do in bullet though, or in a blitz tournament, especially if you know anything at all about the Center Game, because seriously who studies that thing?

Actually, 1.d4 e5 2.e4 Nc6 3.dxe5 Nxe5 4.f4 is quite playable for white.

But he isn't basically a full pawn up is his point.

I recently had White against the Elephant Gambit  1.e4  e5  2. Nf3  d5 and found that by the time I had barely got a good game-I was running out of time--it is a tough gambit to play against if you never experienced it before.

Here is an exhibition game vs the powerful TCCMB Team. The game was played on the internet and lasted about a year...

Dave Taylor  vs TCCMB Team

The TCCMB team specialized in the Albin Coounter Gambit and had just won from a strong master.

Here are some of the players on the team:

Steve Ham ICCF 2498   [he is now a grandmaster]

Mercian   IECC 2455

Karsten Fyhn  ICCF  2353

Santhosh M Paul  ICCF 2359

Gary Good  ICCF 2341

I don't think this line is dangerous for Black. Probably a bit depressing to defend, but that's all.

Black was doing OK in this game, but had the unlucky idea of giving back the exchange (29...Rxf4).
The opposite-colored bishop is quite interesting to analyse, but it's apparently very dangerous for Black (especially if you trust your computer's top line).

29...Ba5 seems just fine- I cannot see any meaningful way for white to make progress.

Is the Goring Gambit sound?

well, the Englund gambit obviously isn't sound or good, but black will take back the pawn and if not then this nice trap will happen...

Silly game comments. 4.Bf4! is white's best move, not losing, and after 6.Nc3 (insted of the blunder 6.Bc3) Black is toast.

THE KING'S GAMBIT IS NOT VERY GOOD FOR WHITE IF BLACK FINDS THE CORRECT DEFENSE.

BLACK IS CLOSE TO WINNING.

The evaluation of the King's Gambit has changed [to lower] since this forum started.

Here is a good way for Black to get good chances vs the Danish Gambit. [it is pretty simple but rarely played]
