I'm not an IM just an I'm. As an IM you have memorized all of the book moves. I have a life and choose not to memorize book and I choose not to play on your terms. I play tactically and I hope it does open the bedroom door so that while you're asleep I can jump on that pretty girl you're sleeping with.

i play the french (badly), and i have to agree with pfren. people play the exchange variation against me more than anything else, which says a lot about other players at my level..... the symmetrical nature of the position takes away just about any chance of a rich tactical game happening. it really is pretty dull to play, but on the plus side i win about 90% of my games in the exchange french.

If your worried about only playing tactical then you won't be winning very many chess games. I found positional then tactical when the opportunity arrives will win out more often than not. Play your same opening that you like all the time and master it against all opening moves. I play KIA against everything black sends my way and I'm starting to get a lot of wins against higher rated opponents. I threw out theory and go my own way. Makes the game and life more interesting.

Mr_Paul_is_back

I recommend the English opening for white. A lot of people don't know how to play against it. And that includes me. As white I often win, but as black I usually lose. I wish I knew a good reply to this brilliant opening!

Try cracking the french defense with the KIA

Mr_Paul_is_back

How does black continue? I don't find c5 causes White any special problems. W continues with g3 then Bg2,Nf3, d3,0-0, and has good development.

bronsteinitz

I do not like this opening because white can put a pawn on e5 and has king-side attacking possibilities.

I played the english for awhile in tournaments.  One annoying setup I saw was (I believe it's called) the Keres system where black just plays c6 Nf6 and d5 as his first 3 moves.  Seemed to give them an easy to play position, little memorization necessary.

Unless as white you transpose into a slav, then I guess black would have to know a few lines.

I played the French for 19 years in all sorts of competition - OTB, casual, blitz, correspondence (old-fashioned snail mail) - before switching to the Caro-Kann 20 years ago.  But French players are almost a secret society, you never really leave it.  We would get together at tournaments after the last round of the day and lift a few beers (just for the exercise of course) and exchange ideas.

I can tell you flatly that no real French player is afraid of the Exchange Variation.  We laugh at your pathetic impotence. You basically cede any hope of significant opening advantage at move 2 because you are afraid of our powerful opening.  You are nothing but girly-men who regularly soil your panties.

KIA is no more annoyance than a mosquito.  Swat it and move on.  Again, we know early on that you are too lazy or simpleminded to contest the critical lines.  You saw a couple of Fischer games against players 400 points weaker and think you have a solution.  The reality is you have a rubber crutch.  You are worthless and weak.

I don't mean to be insulting, but that's the way true French players regard these cowardly dodges.  If you want respect, be a man and play the classical lines.  Pretend Mommy won't mind if you get your frilly outfit dirty.

Don't beat around the bush Estragon, say whats really on your mind! Lol, I'm a KIA player and I laugh at your ignorance! How dare you face my e4 with your french defence! Such insolence!!! Such arrogance!!!!

In BillWall style I present the following commentary:

I have played the Black side of a French Exchange before. Here is one of my games:

Ziryab

If White has intentions to play the exchange, there is a way to play it that makes sense, although Black equalizes without difficulty.

Why is the French so hated? It should be emulated!

I started playing the French because I was tired of losing to it.
