Something rare is always good for blitz

My thought too: rare, narrow, sharp and forcing if the goal is to win blitz games.

If the goal is to improve in OTB games then it depends: if you are like me and low enough that no one cares then practicing ones regular stuff seems best. If you are high enough that people will be sifting thru your blitz games to prepare for OTB games then you'd need to use blitz to put them off the scent.

I don't play much e4 but when I do I go for the Ruy Lopez. However, against the Traxler, I found a way to setup a brilliant move but the problem is that people play the Giucco Piano and even if they do play the Nf6 line they don't play the Traxler

AlertCamp

I always play into the traxler that is the one line I have studied with an engine so I never mess up white  is better in the traxler as well

If I were good in shorter time controls I'd try the Grob gambit (1. g4). Plenty of tricks in that, even if it's unsound in classical.

I used it once and despite the middlegame, I was able to win. Long-term, not a good opening to use but people get really upset over bad openings because they aren't familiar with them

I'v only played against Grob once and I got really confused and I took on g4 with my bishop and almost lost it when white gets the queen out and threatens to fork it  with a check. Youre also in danger of losing the rook on a8 if you're not careful. It looks fun to play though. It shares ideas with the Englund Gambit in some ways.

Haha just read wikipedia about Grob. Gorbachov, the Sovjet prime minister or something made the cermonial first move for Karpov in a game against Polgar back in the days and he did 1. g4 grin.png

try the bong cloud I've had some success and if people can draw Magnus with it it has to be good

The openings you use at rapid and classical is also good for blitz and bullet as you r well familiar with plans in positions and moves and theory which will make you move faster then your opponent

The Latvian Gambit comes to mind!

Black has good practical odds, often gaining a strong kingside presence or a strong control of the center. The Latvian Gambit is especially effective if White is ill-prepared or under a blitz time control.

It is a pretty rare defense as well, meaning that opponents are very unlikely to be versed in its theory, lending Black a strong knowledge advantage.

And even if White plays a good mainline, the advantage gained can usually be negated or managed with some accurate play by Black. Most often, White will throw away his positional advantage with a single positional error that looks like a natural move.

If your looking for a good resource to learn from, I would recommend The Latvian Gambit Lives by Tony Kosten. It’s a well-made book that covers most common attacks by White and demonstrates how to play as Black properly, as well as how to take advantage of White’s errors. He also gives pretty fair evaluations, as he is not afraid to admit when a position is favorable for White.

Most YT videos do not cover the lines in much depth unfortunately, but rather show a few weak traps that don’t really work against strong opponents. The Butcher’s video on the Latvian Gambit for Black, however is pretty decent, and covers many of the important themes, but does not retain nearly the amount of depth as Tony Kosten’s book does.
